CR-721, also known as COMM Relay Outpost CR-721 and Relay Station 721, was a Federation CR-721-type communication relay station operated by Starfleet in the late 24th century. Located at the edge of Federation space, as of 2384 it was the most remote outpost in the Federation and was solely manned by Lieutenant jg Barniss Frex.

That year, the crew of the USS Protostar visited the station to apply for asylum. When Frex downloaded the Protostar's logs, a Vau N'Akat weapon hidden on the starship corrupted the station's computer, which caused station systems to go haywire and turn its phasers on itself. Frex fled the doomed station in the solitary escape pod, while the Protostar crew were forced to don spacesuits and escape into space, where they were picked up by their vessel. (PRO: "Asylum")

Later, the USS Dauntless arrived at the wreckage of the station to find no signs of survivors. Frex had already been picked up by an Orion vessel and taken to Denaxi Depot. (PRO: "Let Sleeping Borg Lie", "Crossroads")

The Paramount+ and CraveTV episode descriptions inaccurately describe the Protostar crew as applying for asylum at "Deep Space 13." Aaron Waltke explained that this was a residual mistake from an old draft. [1]
