Godzilla vs. Kong

Godzilla vs. Kong

Quickie Review
One is a giant, unpredictable nuclear-powered lizard born from the effects of the atomic age, standing at 393 feet tall. One is a gargantuan, dangerous, docile primate hailing from Skull Island, now standing at 334 feet tall. Now, after causing all kinds of hell on their own, the king of the monsters and the king of Skull Island come face-to-face and throw down with the world as their ring in this latest chapter in Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse that triples as the 3rd film in the Godzilla series and the 2nd film in the Kong series.  5 years ago, Godzilla made his way onto the mainland to defeat King Ghidorah with the help of Mothra and some nuclear power, declaring himself the alpha Titan. However, this time around, Godzilla, ever the unpredictable, unexpected force of nature, has come back to destroy the headquarters of a major tech company along with a few other places and things. Now, with the world once again facing danger at the hands of Big G, the only one who can stop him from causing further chaos is the Eighth Wonder of the World, Kong! The answer to stopping the mysterious rampage lies in an energy source located in the Hollow Earth. It’s two titans. One fight. One battleground: our world. Who will come out on top? Now, you may remember the last time that these beasts came to blows. It was 1962’s King Kong vs. Godzilla and it was a corny, campy bout by today’s standards and after this latest fracas, it’s safe to say that it will truly pale in comparisons to this. Much like 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, this is an absolute blast and it’s twice as more fun than KoTM and it’s just as exciting as Kong: Skull Island. The human element is definitely shaky as a whole much like the other Legendary Godzilla films but there are human elements that are highlights of the film that are both fun and heartfelt. On the fun side, the subplot involving returning KoTM character Madison Russell (Millie Bobby Brown), her friend & classmate Josh (Julian Dennison) and conspiracy theorist/whistleblower/podcaster Bernie (Brian Tyree Henry) is enjoyable and a little funny. On the heartfelt side, Kong’s relationship with lone Iwi native and hearing-impaired child Jia (Kaylee Hottle, who is hearing-impaired in real life and makes her film debut here) is the emotional heart of the film and their moments together will make you believe in their loving friendship. In terms of action and spectacle, the film delivers in full. You wanted a epic brawl between 2 iconic monsters with some exceptional visual effects, huge chaotic carnage and a score by Tom Holkenborg AKA Junkie XL to back it all up? You got it! In spite of the almost spotty human moments, Godzilla vs. Kong is the most fun blockbuster you’ll see all year, delivering on its titular promise and then some. I don’t know what the future holds for the MonsterVerse but if it continues to be like KoTM, Kong: Skull Island or this one, it’s going to be a real ride.
