The Substance

The Substance

Fargeat concocts a snowball that grows in grotesqueness as it progresses, and which is full of rage and self-hatred. Basically Tinseltown chewing up and spitting out who is no longer useful to it, and also the classic adage of paying the price of something that you can't control. Its brutally expository body horror evokes masterpieces like The Thing and lesser works like Society and The Fly II. And it has a delicious style that evokes greats like Kubrick and works like Requiem for a Dream. A role that fits Demi Moore like a glove, who is excellent, Qualley being as GODDESS as can be, and Dennis Quaid as a scumbag who doesn't wash his hands after peeing. This takes being your own enemy to new heights, but Fargeat is more than aware that this is something that is dictated by the pressure of the environment.
