Call Me by Your Name

Unequivocal sensory pleasure. Many will bask in Guadagnino’s sybaritic paintings of brief and intense sexual/emotional satisfaction—practically entirely made up of peeks and scans, caresses and grazes—and gentle familial dynamics, and while it’s an endless lake to swim in, its primary thrill for me was the depiction of meticulous surface: what bubbles up and blends into nature’s constitution. Lady Bird

Lady Bird is a film beyond itself. I wish it didn’t sound hyperbolic to write that this film is a manifestation of faith, the good kind, the whole kind, the kind I wanted but never found in a church or in prayer. But I felt that absolution, that deliverance, that salvation. There is something so whole about this film, even though it cruxes on the very moment when the world you’ve always known has been splintered into pieces. Tay Tay

Phantom Thread

Every square inch of this film is meticulously constructed to such an extent that you’re just waiting for something to disrupt it. At times, it’s somehow dull and beautiful in equal measure, probably because each tiny, repetitive movement is shrouded in mystery but is simultaneously dangling at some type of palpable precipice. The bare-bones setup allows Anderson to slowly but surely tinker with expectations … as he works in and out of gothic romance, dark comedy, and impassioned drama. kevinyang kevinyang

Dunkirk

Nolan fascinates over the hysteria behind the promise of certain death and his intelligence produces a scepticism for male gallantry that is undercut solely by the heroism of his closing chapter. While streams of men crumple with their hands above their heads, Dunkirk crafts heroes out of scarce individuals whose experience goes entirely unmatched by those thrown into the belly of the beast. — Account removed

A beautiful tribute to one of the most deeply rooted traditions in Mexico made with great respect and sensitivity, Coco is a story about the importance of family and its role in the shaping of individuals, as well as a story about oblivion, death and the particular way in which it is perceived and part of the Mexican idiosyncrasy. … Vibrant colours and great attention to detail. Get Out

Sharp, intelligent satire seamlessly woven into a hilarious and scary surface narrative. Peele’s insights on contemporary race relations are eerily realistic … even as the stakes inevitably escalate to absurdism. Fulfills what is arguably the most valuable function of horror; that being its ability to embrace the hideous, disdainful parts of society and have a sort of deranged laugh at it. jared_s jared_s

Every impeccably composed shot—a surreal six-handed love scene; a shimmering hologram of Elvis, hip-swiveling into eternity; a ‘newborn’ replicant, slick with amniotic goo—feels like such a ravishing visual feast. In Memoriam

John Hurt

Hurt saw himself as a character actor, much like one of his heroes Alec Guinness. His admiration for Guinness, who was well known for vanishing completely into a character, perhaps explains why in so many of his performances Hurt is almost unrecognizable. … And then there was the voice, an extraordinarily rich and versatile tool, used most famously in the mid-to-late ’80s when Hurt provided the doom-laden narration for the earliest UK television campaign against Aids, accompanied by apocalyptic images of icebergs and falling monoliths. Bill Paxton

[Ours] was a friendship of laughter, adventure, love of cinema, and mutual respect. Bill wrote beautiful heartfelt and thoughtful letters, an anachronism in this age of digital shorthand. He took good care of his relationships with people, always caring and present for others. He was a good man, a great actor, and a creative dynamo. … The world is a lesser place for his passing, and I will profoundly miss him. James Cameron

Roger Moore

Though Moore was rarely regarded as the best or most definitive Bond, his inimitable humor and panache made him many viewers’ favorite. His tally of seven films equalled that of Connery, though Moore occupied the role for a longer consecutive period. He was eloquent on the distinction between their portrayals. “Sean played Bond as a killer and I played Bond as a lover,” he said. Ryan Gilbey

George A. Romero

Universal screened Shaun of the Dead for him while he was on vacation. … Later that night, George called us in London. I remember standing in my flat in Islington when I got the call from him and he couldn’t have been warmer and kinder about the movie. I remember him saying that it was ‘an absolute blast’. That indeed became the sole poster quote for the movie in the US. I frequently think back to this moment of standing in my house as the moment my life truly changed and the world got smaller. Lady Bird

We can reach to the ends of our minds and pull out the most convoluted and revolutionary ideas to make movies out of, or to write books about in order to feel like we’re doing something new. La La Land

They say third time’s a charm, and in this case that might be true. I needed three viewings of La La Land to fully come to terms with it. The Book of Henry is such a fascinating failure of a film. Its problems are innumerable, but in Colin Trevorrow’s defense, I guess it could all [be] attributed to Gregg Hurwitz’s cuckoo screenplay.
