Etymology
First attested as pezie in 1176. Etymology uncertain. Hypothetical etymologies include a derivation from Proto-Germanic *paþa- (“swamp, marsh”) suffixed with a collectivising suffix and a derivation from Old Frisian. Compare Paddepoel, Padhuis and Pesse.
