Tanning oil is used in two senses that have almost opposite meanings and it is improtant to make a distinction for health reasons. Some use it to refer to sunscreen and some use it to refer to oils which have no sunscreen but are meant to intensify exposure to the sun and thus enhance a suntan. Persons who are fair-skinned or suceptible to the sun due to medications or other reasons should be sure to avoid purchasing a "tanning oil" that contains no sunscreen.
