Rugby League in Sweden was founded by Scott Edwards in 2008. The sport got a boost in the country when Spartacus RUFC (Gothenburg) hosted the 2nd annual Scandinavian Nines Tournament in April 2010. Three Swedish sides (Spartacus, Vänersborg and Borås) played along side teams from Norway and Germany. All three Swedish teams made it to the semi-finals of this tournament.[1]

History

Inspired and encouraged by our friends in Norway, it was decided that a Swedish national team would be started. The initial plan was for Sweden to play a home against Norway in Gothenburg in October 2010, with a view to playing an away tie in Oslo in the spring of 2011. Rugby league is in its infancy in Sweden and is supported mainly by rugby union players, in particular Spartacus Rugby Club in Partille.

Sweden competed in their first rugby league international on the 30th of October when they drew 20 - 20 against Norway. Robin Larsson was the first player to score a try for Sweden.

Current squad

The Squad for the match against Norway, which took place on the 30th of October was announced on Monday the 25th of October.[2]

Rugby League Sweden

While there is no national league in Sweden at present, a side from Gothenburg has competed in the past two Scandinavian Nines Tournaments (2009 in Oslo and 2010 in Gothenburg). The hope is to develop players further in the West of Sweden and perhaps encourage teams in other parts of the comuntry to get involved as well.

In his role as a secondary school teacher, Scott Edwards has been promoting the game amoungst school children and fellow teachers.
