Current season

FC Unirea Urziceni is a Romanian professional football club from Urziceni, south-east Romania. They are the most successful football team from Ialomiţa County, winning the Liga I in the 2008-09 season. This performance granted them the right to participate in the 2009-10 season of the UEFA Champions League group stage.

History

The first sporting club in Urziceni was a football club called "Ialomiţa". On the improvised pitch from Obor, the football team "Ialomiţa" played against teams from Ploieşti, Buzău, and Slobozia. They also played many games against Germans settled around the local lake, from which they took the name “La Nemţi” (“At the Germans'”).

In 1976 a new stadium was inaugurated – Tineretului - at the exit from the city to Manasia, near Hagienoff’s vineyards. In 1988 Unirea Urziceni qualified in the last 16th round of Romanian Cup. They were then defeated by Corvinul Hunedoara, 3 - 1. In 1988-’89, Unirea finished second in the third division, playing against Dunărea Călăraşi to advance into the second division. In 2002, the team was taken over by a new sponsor, Valahorum, changing the whole board. After six months the stadium was expanded to 7,000 seats and the locker rooms were upgraded. In 2003, the new FC Unirea Valahorum Urziceni won promotion to the second division for the first time in its history.

Advancement to Liga I

Then, in 2006, came Unirea's best showing ever when it advanced to the top level of Romanian football, Liga I.[1] The team had a mediocre start, until former Romanian international Dan Petrescu and former FC Steaua Bucharest President, Mihai Stoica, joined the club. Unirea finished 10th in the 2006-07 season, a great achievement, considering that the team was newly promoted. In the 2007-08 season, Unirea fared a lot better, finishing 5th and reaching the Romanian Cup final. Dan Petrescu nicknamed the team Chelsea of Ialomiţa, because both teams play in blue, and Dan is still attached to his former club, Chelsea F.C..

Liga I 2008-09

After 33 games in Liga I 2008-09, Unirea mathematically won the championship after they defeated main rivals to the title Dinamo Bucharest and FC Timişoara, despite only three seasons in Liga I, with unknown players, and with less money invested than the other contenders to the title. The team drew 1-1 with Steaua Bucharest in their final match and finished on 70 points, three more than nearest team, FC Timişoara.[1][2] Steaua's manager had recently resigned.[3] Unirea won the final match with second-half goals from Iulian Apostol and Marius Bilasco.[2] The team will receive bonus money of US$8.5 million from UEFA.[1]. Unirea will play in the UEFA Champions League 2009-10 group stage and will match up against Spanish side Sevilla, Scottish champions Rangers, and German side Stuttgart. Unirea will play their first match of the group against Sevilla in Spain.[4]

Stadium

Unirea plays its home matches on Tineretului Stadium with a capacity of 7,000 seats.[1] The UEFA Champions League 2009-10 group stage matches will be played at Steaua Stadium, because the Tineretului Stadium doesn't meet the requirements.
