Placostylus ambagiosus pandora is a subspecies of very large, air-breathing land snail, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusc in the family Bulimulidae, the bulimulus snails and their allies.

This subspecies is critically endangered.

Distribution

This land snail is endemic to the Spirits Bay area of Northland in the North Island of New Zealand. It is found in rocky scree under cover of Muehlenbeckia and Phormium (flax), in a small forest remnant, containing Corynocarpus laevigatus (karaka) trees.

Shell description

This moderately sized shell has a single strong tubercle on the basal lip.

Coloration of the interior is very dark reddish-brown, with an ochraceous-salmon rounded lip, and deep reddish within the aperture.

The shell height is up to 71 mm, and width up to 31 mm.

Conservation status

Placostylus ambagiosus pandora is classified by the New Zealand Department of Conservation as being Nationally Critical.
