Overview:
Different Fur is a recording studio located at 3470 19th Street in the Mission district of San Francisco, California. For over 30 years Different Fur has been recording music from Grammy & Oscar award winning artists and independent musicians to feature film soundtracks, videos and radio & TV commercials.
Background:
The studio was first founded by influential electronic music composer/keyboardist Patrick Gleeson in 1968. By the early 1970's Gleeson was doing sessions with Jefferson Starship on his recently acquired 8-track and Moog. It was his expertise in early synthesizers, like the Moog, that eventually led to collaborations with Herbie Hancock, one artist who Gleeson credits with helping Different Fur get off the ground. By 1971 Gleeson was working with Hancock on Crossings and Sextant. He went on to record many of the synthesizers on Hancock's master work Head Hunters at Different Fur.
While Gleeson eventually went on to sell Different Fur, it remains a successful recording studio to this day. Over the years Brian Eno, Devo, Kronos Quartet, Bobby Hutcherson, and Primus have all recorded at Different Fur.
