Maria Evangelina Mascardi is a world-renowned[1] Argentinian lutenist, guitarist, and theorbist.[2][3] She is currently a university professor residing in Orte, Italy, and teaches Lute at the Conservatorio Antonio Vivaldi in Alessandria, Italy.
Life
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1977, she graduated in classical guitar and started her concert career as a highly gifted young soloist. As a teenager, she devoted herself to the guitar, performing in various concerts. She studied music at the National Music Academy Juan Pedro Esnaola with Silvia Fernandez and Gabriel Schebor, where she graduated as a state-approved music teacher.[4] She moved to Europe in 1997 and decided to study the lute at the Swiss Music Academy (SCB) in Basel, Switzerland[1]. She graduated as a soloist in Hopkinson Smith's class in 2001, obtaining her “Solisten Diplom” in 2001. She then acquired another academic degree while working as a soloist with Tiziano Bagnati at Benedetto Marcello Conservatory.[4]
She has accompanied well-known soloists such as Jordi Savall, Andrea Marcon, Giovanni Antonini and Sir Simon Rattle as a Continuo player, participating in 30 CD productions. She has now devoted herself solely to lute solo performances, sometimes playing in ensembles, such as the Ensemble Zefiro under Alfredo Bernardini or the Monteverdi Choir under Sir John Eliot Gardiner.
When selecting works for recording and playing she prefers the complete works of Johann Sebastian Bach and Sylvius Leopold Weiss, whom she described as the "last of the great lute players."[5][6]
Evangelina Mascardi began teaching Hauptfach Laute in 2010 at the Conservatorio Antonio Vivaldi in Alessandria, Italy. She is also artistic director in the Course on Early Music Ottaviano Alberti in Orte.[4]
In order to support a solo instrument, for which there is relatively little classical literature, she is involved in advocacy groups for this genre of music. For example, she has been a member of the Convegno internazionale di Chitarra Scientific Committee for the Promotion of Guitar Music in Milan since 2000 and has been on the active board of the Italian Lute Society since 2021.
Discography (Solo Lute)
Mascardi has five solo albums including two devoted to Johann Sebastian Bach and Sylvius Leopold Weiss (ORF-Alte Musik, Austria 2003 and 2009), one to theorbo solos by the Modena-born Bellerofonte Castaldi (Arcana 2011) and one devoted to the Belgian lutenist and composer Laurent de Saint-Luc (Musique en Wallonie 2018).[1] She recently release a new album, J. S. Bach: Complete Lute Works (Released on March 18, 2022, Label: Arcana, available as a CD, but also in the form of high-resolution 24bit/96kHz files)[7].
