The Shovel Bird is a character from the 1951 Disney animated feature film, Alice in Wonderland. It is one of the creatures that Alice encounters in the Tulgey Wood area.
Background[]
The Shovel Bird, as its name implies, is a bird-like creature with a grey shovel used for its head and mouth seen in a plumage of green feathers with yellow ones around its neck and on its head, as well as a long orangish brown neck and pair of legs and feet with three toes each. It is shown to be very busy doing its digging habits using its own shovel for its ability to dig (presumably digging for something underground) though Alice does not physically ask it for directions.
Appearances[]
Alice in Wonderland[]
The Shovel Bird is encountered after Alice encounters a group of Umbrella Vultures while on her way to find a way out. Alice hears digging nearby and then observes it digging dirt in a happy mood while she tries to find a way out only for Alice to unawarely bump into a Cage Bird and two of its birds inside. Two Shovel Birds are later seen approaching Alice who is singing "Very Good Advice" where it and the other creatures of Tulgey Wood approach her singing. Soon as Alice cries, another Shovel Bird also cries and tearfully reacts to Alice who is lost in Tulgey Wood alongside a family of Horn Ducks and a Mirror Bird who are also tearfully reacting to Alice just as the Shovel Bird and the other creatures of Tulgey Wood suddenly disappear. The Shovel Bird make no further appearances throughout the rest of the film.
