This article is about the character from Monsters at Work. For the character from Inside Out, see Joy.

Joy is a female monster who works as a Scarer for Fear Co. in the Disney/Pixar animated series, Monsters at Work.

Background[]

Personality[]

At first, Joy seems rather laid-back and affable, often treating others with a degree of cordiality. However, she is eventually revealed to be arrogant and competitive, often treating any monster who she sees as better than her like utter dirt and is quite mean to her fellow co-workers. Because of this, she isn't held in high regard by the other Fear Co. scarers.

Powers and abilities[]

Being a reptile, Joy is a long and flexible creature that can move swiftly and quickly. She also has the ability to spit fireballs from her mouth.

Appearances[]

Monsters at Work[]

In "Opening Doors", Joy is first seen coming out fo the Scare Floor at Fear Co. where her boss Johnny Worthington III introduces her to Tylor Tuskmon and she greets him cordially and expresses hope of him potentially joining FearCo. as a scarer as per Johnny's job offer, but Tylor later decides not to take the offer.

In "Field of Screams", Joy appears as the pitcher for Fear Co. and uses her fire-breathing powers to give her team an advantage. When one of her team members, Skylar, is knocked unconscious, Tylor is called in to take his place but Johnny makes him the pitcher and removes Joy from that position, which she accepts with no complaints. Joy's team ultimately wins the game.

In Descent into Fear, she appears on the Fear Co. laugh floor to welcome Tylor to the company. However, we soon see a more meaner side of Joy as when Tylor begins catching up to her in the scream polls, she turns hostile and begins demeaning her co-workers, much to their anger as they begin placing bets on Tylor to beat her. Tylor soon does when he is forced to scare a kid he knows back when he worked as a jokester at Monsters, Inc., with Joy seeing this and is quietly surprised.

In Powerless, she is tasked with Declan and Skyler to guard Fear Co.'s receiving station when it is filled with mixed energy. After MIFT knocks Declan out, Duncan disguises himself as Declan to relieve Joy and Skyler of their guard duties. When Joy gets suspicious, Fritz manages to intimidate her into vacating the premises. She is later seen with her co-workers watching a live news broadcast as Tylor and Val show Monstropolous the benefits of Laugh Energy she began to smile. It's unknown what became of Joy after this.

Trivia[]

  • Her name is ironic on account of how she scares children rather than bring them joy. Not just that, but her later cruel personality also brings to mind the irony of her name.
  • Joy shares a few similarities to Randall Boggs:
    • Both of them have a reptilian appearance.
    • Both of them tend to pick on their co-workers they think are inferior to them.
    • She has a rivalry and jealousy towards Tylor who's better at the job she does similar to Randall with Sulley.
  • It is unknown what happened to her after Johnny’s arrest. She could have had a change of heart and decided to become a jokester at Monsters Inc. along with Skylar and Chompy.
