May Zone 10 Update
The season is heating up as we head into summer! The 2021 Zone 10 North American Youth Championship (NAYC) Selection Trials continued at the Sonoma Horse Park Spring Classic. We were thrilled to see top competition in each of the four categories: Young Riders, Juniors, Children’s, and the all-new Pre-Juniors.

Best of luck to our participants competing next week at the Temecula Valley National III. Immediately following the final class of the Trial program, riders will meet and the four teams will be named pending acceptance of the riders for a spot on the team.

We are looking forward to the USHJA National Championships returning to The Las Vegas National (Nov. 15-21) at the South Point Arena and Equestrian Center. The USHJA Affiliate Championships will include expanded offerings for Juniors and Amateurs in Hunters and Equitation at fence heights of 2' and 2'6", and Jumpers from .70m to .90m.

Remember that registration is open for the 2021 USHJA Horsemanship Quiz Challenge and USHJA Adult Horsemanship Quiz Challenge. It’s time to put your horsemanship knowledge to the test!

We are so proud of all the USHJA Affiliate Organizations within our zone. Throughout the year, we will be highlighting each of them and this month we are featuring the Los Angeles Hunter Jumper Association.
See you in the show ring!

USHJA Outreach Member Highlight
Kathy Vincent, of Studio City, California, was champion of the 2020 USHJA Hunters 2'9".

What did you enjoy about participating in the Outreach program in 2020?
More class options, especially at 2'9". Thank you for the opportunity and options! Please keep the program going.

Tell us how you got involved in the sport.
I was looking for an outlet to give me balance in life and to offset stress. About 11 years ago, I went on a trail ride in the Sierra Nevada mountains with a group of extremely experienced horse people (I had been on a horse maybe four times my entire life; never rode as a child, etc. etc.) I was mounted on a chestnut gelding named Skippy. During the trail there was an open field where I took Skippy on a full gallop. It was the first time in my life that I didn't think about anything - work, bills, etc. - except for me and Skippy. I felt this freedom and exhilaration. I knew then that I wanted to learn how to ride and ride properly, so I 'found' my trainer Chris Land who taught me how to ride at the age of 44 and here we are.

What’s your favorite riding memory?
There are so many - from the highest highs to the lowest lows. But one memory stands out. It was a couple of years ago at The Oaks show in which Viv (show name is Vienna, also known as The Duchess - yes, she's an alpha mare) placed 5th in an extremely competitive under saddle class against amazing movers and some of the top riders in the country. I literally sobbed walking out of the ring as did Chris. It was one of the proudest moments ever because I only learned to ride as an adult and when I started with Chris I didn't even know how to trot a horse. And when I started with Viv (we were both green), I couldn't canter to save my life. We've come a long way.

What are riding goals for this year?
To give my girls good rides and continue enjoying the process. I also wish to continue advancing in both show rings, particularly the jumper ring as this is a new experience for me as a hunter/eq rider, and I need to push myself outside of my comfort zone and be patient.

What do you enjoy most about the USHJA community?
It is a community in the truest sense; passionate individuals who care for and support each other because of the mutual bond with and love for horses.

Los Angeles Hunter Jumper Association

The Los Angeles Hunter Jumper Association (LAHJA) aims to provide exhibitors with an opportunity to compete in quality horse shows without traveling great distances and raise the quality of horse showing within the Los Angeles area.

Founded in 1960 with 18 members, the association has grown to include about 800 members. “I’ve been a member of LAHJA since I was a teenager,” commented LAHJA President Kay Altheuser. “We used to be called the Los Angeles Horse Show Exhibitors Association and years ago they even had points for Western divisions.”

LAHJA offers six medal finals ranging in height from 2’ to 3’3.’’ “We pride ourselves on our medal finals,” said Kay. “Everyone really enjoys the medal finals. There have been riders who have done our medals and went on through the top levels of our sport. For instance, Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum competed in the LAHJA Medal Finals.”

LAHJA members can earn points throughout the year toward their year-end awards. “We have awards for riders of many levels,” Kay noted. “Being a member of LAHJA is a great stepping stone for riders on the local circuit.”

In addition to year-end awards, LAHJA grants $5,000 to the top three overall winners in its annual LAHJA Horsemastership Scholarship. Members use their knowledge about horses and horsemanship for the chance to earn a college scholarship. LAHJA encourages members up to age 21 to participate in the program.

“Our Horsemastership Scholarship Program encompasses many aspects of horsemanship,” Kay said. “We use the USHJA Horsemanship Quiz Challenge as the written portion. They also must demonstrate their hands-on skills around the horse, know their equipment, and demonstrate tacking and grooming a horse. Then, they submit a video for the riding portion. Members can participate for multiple years and we have had a few members who earned around $10,000 in scholarship funds. It’s a wonderful way to be able to give back to the community.”

The Los Angeles Hunter Jumper Association is proud to be a USHJA Affiliate Organization. “We appreciate the grants that USHJA offers and the opportunity to send members to the USHJA Affiliate National Championships in Las Vegas,” Kay added.
