Proposed flags of Norway (1821)

Flag of Norway
Request
Could someone please create SVG files of the above proposals for the flag of Norway from 1821. More information on them can be seen on this page here. Thanks. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 17:57, 2 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Snow Lion Fenian:
Other source images can be found at Forslag til flagg, for year 1821. Those are same images, but with layout paper for color expectation. En rouge (talk) 19:33, 28 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I think that the second (2nd) proposal can simply be made by taking the flag of the Dominican Republic (or "Santo Domingo") and removing the coat of arms. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 06:39, 24 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Batavia's flag

Article(s): Batavia (Indonesian, but it can be used in English version too)

Request
Could someone recreated two Batavia's flag (image 1 and image 2, fig. 212) in vectorized version? Thanks. AnsyahF (talk) 01:19, 24 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Graphist opinion(s)
@AnsyahF: Hi!
  1. FYI, I've found this picture of the first flag. It corresponds to the french text description #212. But it doesn't seems in accordance with the drawing fig. 212. What is your opinion? Thanks En rouge (talk) 00:14, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  2. And, what about the svg version of the escutcheon?
  1. @En rouge: At first I didn't believe about that, but I found the colored one and it confirmed your findings. Seems the author don't have the image colored.
(By the way, your "first" flag is likely originated from Nieuwe Tafel van Alle de Zeevarende Vlagge des Werelts. See the bottom part, third from left)
  2. The escutcheon is taken from File:Coat of Arms of Batavia (1930).svg. Both of these SVG are created by same author. The author said that he took some freedom to draw these coat of arms as long as it fits the blazon (verbal description). So, I think it's OK. AnsyahF (talk) 05:34, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@AnsyahF and En rouge: , I found a different "Flag of Batavia" in this flag chart from 1864. It looks similar to the first image, but the field within the coat of arms of Batavia is blank. But note that a lot of the flags in this chart are inaccurate, for example the Kingdoms of "Holland" and Belgium don't typically have their coats of arms, furthermore, I have noticed a lot more errors in the flag chart, but it does show an alternative flag of Batavia. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 21:00, 17 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Donald Trung: I like it, but it would be nice if you standardize the "escutcheon" theme to paper-style (for example). AnsyahF (talk) 01:44, 24 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
And what about the ratio of the flags to be changed to be like this flag? Do you mind? AnsyahF (talk) 02:12, 24 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@AnsyahF: , my bad, I forgot to add my standard disclaimer that I am not a WikiGraphist, well, not a very skilled one. 😅 I created the concept image as a reference for WikiGraphists to work with. Ever since discovering this page I just wanted to help out in whatever small way I could as I asked quite a lot of requests when I "got started" here and I am trying to expand my Inkscape skills. But for whatever reason I cannot change the proportions of images in Inkscape (which is why I rarely take on flag requests) and I tried to create "as close an approximation" as I could with how I know Inkscape works. Also I hated how this request got ignored for so long, but unfortunately I can't help beyond what I did above. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 06:47, 24 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Donald Trung: I'm sorry for pushing you a bit hard, I understand it. And I want to say thank you for making the concept. I used your concept as reference to new flag that I just created. I managed to standardize the element theme though it needs more file from the others. Moreover, this flag is documented on several flag charts and it was described as naval flag, and it shows transparent background of the herald (look at the gallery to find out more). Flag of the State of Dir

Article(s)
Dir (princely state)
Request
[1] there is information about missing subtitles in the file description, after 14 years it would have to be fixed. the inscription at the top meant "in the name of a benevolent and merciful God", in the middle a shahada in Urdu ("Allah is the only God and Muhammad is his prophet"), and at the bottom in Arabic "help God's victory is near."

In the file description we can read: ,,A simplified flag of the historical Pakistani state of Dir. The flag also contains text in Arabic, but I couldn't find a high-resolution source.`` The file was made based on the information from there, this source mentions the red version, this Italian website confirms both projects. The flag without inscriptions is not confirmed by any source known to me, but sometimes it appears as an illustration, however, appears information about the missing text. I think this may be due to a wrong flag posted on wikipedia for the last 14 years. Flag without inscriptions should be treated as speculative.

The source for crwflags is from 1993/4 (the original is here). The source for rbvex is from 1990. Both have a text, as well as an eagle flying instead of the current unmoving bird. So you are right, it seems the flag needs to be corrected, but the bird must also be changed to be more faithful to the source. Veverve (talk) 00:18, 11 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Veverve: , I'm simply using the word Hubert de Vries uses. He's an expert in heraldry, vexillology, and general iconography and he used the term for this type of coat of arms. If you know a better word then please change it. Also, I'm not familiar with the French word for "Achievement". --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 13:30, 11 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Dictionary.com defines achievement: Heraldry. the full display of the armorial bearings of an individual or corporation. I'm not sure it's what is intended here. RCraig09 (talk) 19:04, 12 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps the term "Coat of arms" is better in this context then. In Vietnamese we just use the general terms "Quốc huy" and "Huy hiệu" which can be used to translate "Achievement", "Emblem", "Coat of arms", Etc. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 06:04, 13 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I’d stick to “full emblem”, “elaborated state symbol”, or something like that; while I get what you mean by calling it an “achievement”, this is a rather technical term in European (esp. British) heraldry, usually implying the presence of such specific elements as a compartment, motto, shield, helm, crest, and supporters. Few of these have direct parallels in most post-colonial republican or socialist emblems.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 01:12, 15 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Improving flags of Malta

Article(s): w:Flag of Malta

Request
A user sent a request on my talk page for the corrections for the flag of Malta, according to the materials he provided, I saw some issues for the George Cross. First, beneath the Saint George and the Dragon there should be an outline of rose (looks like "Tudor Rose") between two dots. Second, between each arms there should a letter G inserting the Roman numeral VI in serif face surrounding the circle. He found no any proper SVG image that has such detailed drawing, so I hope everyone who have good techniques at drawing SVG cold help to improve these flag images. Also, the same changes could be applied to other SVGs including the George Cross, especially for the coat of arms of Malta.

Here are some materials gave to me:

I've just searched the FOTW and I saw a page including comments related to the George Cross, and we also have some photos at Category:George Cross, I hope they would help.--Great Brightstar (talk) 18:08, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Goran tek-en It's a simplified version of the Tudor Rose. Kamran.nef (talk) 10:51, 5 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Goran tek-en I think following the medal itself rather than the PNG would be a better choice. Because the PNG is essentially someone's illustration of the medal. So I think following the source is better. Kamran.nef (talk) 20:27, 14 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Kamran.nef Do you want just the line version like this or a shaded version as well, more like the real medal? --always ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 15:06, 15 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Goran tek-en I just need the line version for the flag. The line version is pretty sufficient. But it seems one other user wants the metal colors of the medal, below this request. Kamran.nef (talk) 20:36, 15 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Kamran.nef Those drafts are PNG versions of the original SVG file I'm working in and will upload to commons.

  • Draft 100%-1-.
  • Draft 200%-1.
  • Background so you can see where it's white or transparent.
  • This illustration is made to work best in 100% but when you add it to a map it will be much smaller what I can see. So to make a much smaller version work well (you can't always just reduce the size) I suggest you tell which size you need and then I make a version for that. Feedback, thanks. --always ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 13:26, 17 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Goran tek-en Fantastic work, thank you so much. The current SVG flag of Malta uses 166.66px for height and width so around that size will be good. Other users might tweak the size in the future but not a lot. I didn't quite understand why the size can not be changed so if my answer is incorrect let me know. Kamran.nef (talk) 14:05, 17 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Kamran.nef: although vector art is indefinitely scalable in principle, in practice some features (line thickness e.g.) often need to be treated disproportionately in order to look optimal when rendered or printed much larger or smaller than the reference design. Flags are often used as small icons, where ‘important’ details can be lost and ‘minor’ features exaggerated, seemingly at random, unless the artwork is adapted to avoid such artefacts.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 23:54, 17 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for clarifying. Kamran.nef (talk) 08:46, 18 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Kamran.nef Those drafts are PNG versions of the original SVG file I'm working in and will upload to commons.

Wiktionary Logo modification

I would like to propose a new Wiktionary logo that includes the character

rather than
. In text this can be done by tagging the character as Japanese rather than Chinese, and it might also depend on the font. I hope it is not terribly complicated to switch the character from 维 to

New version of File:Nuvola Nordic flags.svg

Article(s): en:Template:User Nordic cinema task force and en:Template:WikiProject Film

Request
Make a new edited version of File:Nuvola Nordic flags.svg by replacing its flag of the Faroe Islands with the flag of Finland , so then it has all five flags of the five Nordic countries.
The new image would replace the Nordic cinema task force's image in the templates User Nordic cinema task force and WikiProject Film. --85.23.79.231 14:10, 25 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Graphist opinion(s)

Not a graphist. Is this not done one purpose to exclude Finland which is culturally different from the other countries? I feel such a request should be to make a new image and not to overwrite the previous one. Veverve (talk) 01:24, 27 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that's what I meant with the "new edited version", sorry if the request wasn't clear enough. It can be named something like File:Nuvola Nordic flags v2.svg or File:Nuvola Nordic countries flags.svg. 85.23.79.231 11:13, 27 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Arms of the House of Estridsen (SVG)

Article(s): en:House of Estridsen, en:Ancient and modern arms, en:Battle of Lyndanisse, en:Obotrites, ETC.

Request
The current file for the arms of the royal House of Estridsen (SVG) looks like a cartoon; moreover it is historically inaccurate. According to the historical source, the waterlily pads should have an uniform size, just like in the deriving arms of Denmark (SVG). The beasts could instead be improved using the design from the deriving arms of Tallinn (SVG), that are identical to the original ones, but adjusting their size according to the different shape of the original shield. --Est. 2021 (talk) 10:16, 28 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

most of the white triangles are empty, and one is fading red. Can anyone fix it?

It took a bit of work to isolate where all the issues were but I finally tracked it down to an issue with cloning of the triangles. They should all be visible now.

@Nancystodd: Hi! Do you know you can test the rendering of your svg file in File:test.svg?
yours, En rouge (talk) 15:25, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@En rouge: . I did not know that but this will be very useful for me. Wikimedia's SVG renderer does not behave like any other viewers including the browsers themselves. It can look perfect but not quite render when uploaded to Commons. It is not often an issue, but in SVGs that show display problems, it is hard to trace the problems caused by their renderer. Many thanks, Nancystodd (talk) 20:07, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Standard of the Armed Forces of Malta

Article(s): w:Armed Forces of Malta

Request
On this page I discovered an image for the standard of the Armed Forces of Malta. It's based on the national flag of Malta, but looks like a 4:3 flag, on the middle of flag there is a golden De Redin Tower, below the golden tower there is a golden ribbon with the motto FORZI ARMATI. It would be awesome if anyone can make it available in SVG format. --Great Brightstar (talk) 01:03, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

New logo for Limburgish Wiktionary

The community wishes for the logo to be changed. The current motto of the project, ‘d vrie waordsbook, is in 'High Limburgish', a deprecated standard form. Instead, we wish for the motto to run ‘t vrie waordebook. None of us are able to create such a file. Could someone please do this for us? Steinbach (talk) 20:41, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
