Proposed flags of Norway (1821)

Article(s)
Flag of Norway
Request
Could someone please create SVG files of the above proposals for the flag of Norway from 1821. More information on them can be seen on this page here. Thanks. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 17:57, 2 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Graphist opinions
@Snow Lion Fenian:
Other source images can be found at Forslag til flagg, for year 1821. Those are same images, but with layout paper for color expectation. En rouge (talk) 19:33, 28 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I think that the second (2nd) proposal can simply be made by taking the flag of the Dominican Republic (or "Santo Domingo") and removing the coat of arms. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 06:39, 24 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

to be progressively completed...
@Snow Lion Fenian:
before completing ornaments on flags, please tell me if you have some comments/requirements, essentially about aspect ratio, line width, colors, or...
yours, En rouge (talk) 02:17, 9 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@En rouge: Those all seem nicely in order, thank you for doing this. I'd say it's okay to go ahead and add the extra symbols on each one. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 15:43, 9 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

213.192.68.53, 10 September 2021

two comments
- 10 doesn't use this strange color, but only yellowed material.
- 14 does not present Scandinavian cross, only a very thick Saint George's Cross

— 213.192.68.53 — end
En rouge edit, moved from above:

— Moved gallery posted by @213.192.68.53:  :
— 213.192.68.53 — end

— end of En rouge edit

@213.192.68.53: , please, can you give references for your arguments :
  • for 10: yellow rather than olive (as seen in 04 & (ref.1)
but in (ref.1), we can see differences between mast color (yellow-ish) and flag color (olive-ish)... what are your sources?
but I can agree with you, as for #10, I think viewed-black is blue instead, but I have no source...
I think it's the same (blue instead of black) for 6 & 7 (painted source images give me this feeling), as well as 10 perhaps ;
14 seems really be black (but I've got no other source than the given paper painted flags copy)
  • for 14: do you mean the cross is centered ? do you have a source ?
  • and/or other sources ?
  • for lion's tail, what's the problem ?
the main issue can be inward or outward... whatever the painting/display/rendering...
no?
all pictures are lion-ward (i.e. outward), rather than leopard-ward (inward)
so, what do you mean ?

Batavia's flag

Article(s): Batavia (Indonesian, but it can be used in English version too)

Request
Could someone recreated two Batavia's flag (image 1 and image 2, fig. 212) in vectorized version? Thanks. AnsyahF (talk) 01:19, 24 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Graphist opinion(s)
@AnsyahF: Hi!
  1. FYI, I've found this picture of the first flag. It corresponds to the french text description #212. But it doesn't seems in accordance with the drawing fig. 212. What is your opinion? Thanks En rouge (talk) 00:14, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  2. And, what about the svg version of the escutcheon?
  1. @En rouge: At first I didn't believe about that, but I found the colored one and it confirmed your findings. Seems the author don't have the image colored.
    (By the way, your "first" flag is likely originated from Nieuwe Tafel van Alle de Zeevarende Vlagge des Werelts. See the bottom part, third from left)
  2. The escutcheon is taken from File:Coat of Arms of Batavia (1930).svg. Both of these SVG are created by same author. The author said that he took some freedom to draw these coat of arms as long as it fits the blazon (verbal description). So, I think it's OK. AnsyahF (talk) 05:34, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@AnsyahF and En rouge: , I found a different "Flag of Batavia" in this flag chart from 1864. It looks similar to the first image, but the field within the coat of arms of Batavia is blank. But note that a lot of the flags in this chart are inaccurate, for example the Kingdoms of "Holland" and Belgium don't typically have their coats of arms, furthermore, I have noticed a lot more errors in the flag chart, but it does show an alternative flag of Batavia. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 21:00, 17 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Donald Trung: I like it, but it would be nice if you standardize the "escutcheon" theme to paper-style (for example). AnsyahF (talk) 01:44, 24 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
And what about the ratio of the flags to be changed to be like this flag? Do you mind? AnsyahF (talk) 02:12, 24 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@AnsyahF: , my bad, I forgot to add my standard disclaimer that I am not a WikiGraphist, well, not a very skilled one. 😅 I created the concept image as a reference for WikiGraphists to work with. Ever since discovering this page I just wanted to help out in whatever small way I could as I asked quite a lot of requests when I "got started" here and I am trying to expand my Inkscape skills. But for whatever reason I cannot change the proportions of images in Inkscape (which is why I rarely take on flag requests) and I tried to create "as close an approximation" as I could with how I know Inkscape works. Also I hated how this request got ignored for so long, but unfortunately I can't help beyond what I did above. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 06:47, 24 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Donald Trung: I'm sorry for pushing you a bit hard, I understand it. And I want to say thank you for making the concept. I used your concept as reference to new flag that I just created. I managed to standardize the element theme though it needs more file from the others. Moreover, this flag is documented on several flag charts and it was described as naval flag, and it shows transparent background of the herald (look at the gallery to find out more). Achievement of the Việt Cộng

Article(s): en:Emblem of Vietnam#List

Request
Hello fellow people online… I would like to create the creation of an SVG version of the above achievement (coat of arms), the preferred file name would be "File:Coat of arms of the Việt Cộng.svg". --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 07:21, 11 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Graphist opinion(s)

Not a graphist: @Donald Trung: are you sure the word "Achievement" is the word you want? Do you know the French word of what you are trying to say for "Achievement"? Veverve (talk) 12:51, 11 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Veverve: , I'm simply using the word Hubert de Vries uses. He's an expert in heraldry, vexillology, and general iconography and he used the term for this type of coat of arms. If you know a better word then please change it. Also, I'm not familiar with the French word for "Achievement". --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 13:30, 11 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Dictionary.com defines achievement: Heraldry. the full display of the armorial bearings of an individual or corporation. I'm not sure it's what is intended here. RCraig09 (talk) 19:04, 12 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps the term "Coat of arms" is better in this context then. In Vietnamese we just use the general terms "Quốc huy" and "Huy hiệu" which can be used to translate "Achievement", "Emblem", "Coat of arms", Etc. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 06:04, 13 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I’d stick to “full emblem”, “elaborated state symbol”, or something like that; while I get what you mean by calling it an “achievement”, this is a rather technical term in European (esp. British) heraldry, usually implying the presence of such specific elements as a compartment, motto, shield, helm, crest, and supporters. Few of these have direct parallels in most post-colonial republican or socialist emblems.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 01:12, 15 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hunza

Article(s): en:Hunza (princely state)

request(s)

1 request is a restore of the old version of incorrect flag [1] sources:[2] [3] [4] ✓ Done

2 request is the addition of the Mir standard [5], which also requires an emblem.

I have not found a reliable source with the correct image of the coat of arms, but it was certainly a lion holding flag, with a ribbon on the mast with the word Hunza state and inscription above the flag [6] [7], most likely no formal draft exists.

standard name ,,Flag of Mir of Hunza`` coat of arms name ,,Emblem of Hunza (Kanjut)``

@SpinnerLaserzthe2nd: caution : the two files are only used in 2016 Olympics pages, and don't need to be modified ;
I think that :
  • 2020 - 2016 files shall remain as is :
  • please remove your renaming request, still being 2000 - 2016
  • (except, eventually, having Summer in the file name)
  • for the 2020 Olympics :
  • required 2020 files should be new files
  • Tokyo 2020 Olympics have just started, these diagrams only need to be done after the event, as all data are compiled.

Wiktionary Logo modification

Article(s): English Wiktionary Logo, potentially other Wiktionary projects

Request
I would like to propose a new Wiktionary logo that includes the character
instead of 维. See here for a discussion I started on this topic at English Wiktionary. One detail is that, as User:justin(r)leung suggested, it would be nice for the character to be set in the same style as it is on the en:Wikipedia logo (ie, to look like
rather than
. In text this can be done by tagging the character as Japanese rather than Chinese, and it might also depend on the font. I hope it is not terribly complicated to switch the character from 维 to
, and I think having such a version would make proposing the change much more fluid. Thanks, --ChromeGames923 (talk) 23:37, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Simplify a crown and change the colour and design of its cap

Article(s): the articles which already use this image

Request
I ask someone to: 1) simplify the crown of the SVG by removing all fleurs de lys, the pearls on the arch, and the decorations on the band; 2) also for the crown, turn the cap in red and make it go higher; 3) the crown should be a bit higher above the coat of arms, which means the crown should not be moved and that CoA should be lowered. It is so that the SVG looks more like the model. --Veverve (talk) 06:45, 10 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The star (upper left corner) on the model (other angle) is filled with yellow, but the star in the SVG version is empty. The star in the SVG version should be filled with yellow. The current file for the arms of the royal House of Estridsen (SVG) looks like a cartoon; moreover it is historically inaccurate. According to the historical source, the waterlily pads should have an uniform size, just like in the deriving arms of Denmark (SVG). @En rouge: . I did not know that but this will be very useful for me. Wikimedia's SVG renderer does not behave like any other viewers including the browsers themselves. It can look perfect but not quite render when uploaded to Commons. It is not often an issue, but in SVGs that show display problems, it is hard to trace the problems caused by their renderer. SVG templates - Irish Wolfhound

Article(s)
Template
Request
Could someone please create some heraldic SVG templates of an Irish Wolfhound, based on the images seen here. And, if it's not too much, I'd ask that a number of them be created, displaying the Wolfhound in various different positions (running, standing on all fours, rampant, lying down, and so on). Thanks. Former coat of arms of Semarang

Article(s): Semarang

Request
Could someone make vectorised version of the old coat of arms of Semarang? Yes, I know if there is already an SVG version of this coat of arms, but it seems quite inaccurate and incomplete compared to the small JPG version which I have uploaded here. Can someone please create an SVG files of the flags of the following Breton towns:
  1. The flag of Binic, as seen here.

  4. The flag of Fouesnant, as seen here.
  5. The flag of Landerneau, as seen here.

@RCraig09: Thanks for taking on Fouesnant. Yes, I think the 3:2 aspect ratio would suffice, if it's okay. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 15:47, 13 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@RCraig09:
What is the copyright status of this image? The image is significantly different from the CoA already on Commons.
It appears you vectorized the image on
If that is the case, then the vectorization may be a derivative work of that flag.
That page credits the image as "Flag of Fouesnant - Image by Arnaud Leroy, 20 March 2002".
That page describes the flag as

According to P. Rault (Les drapeaux bretons de 1188 à nos jours [rau98]), the flag of Fouesnant, as reported by Divy Kervella, is a banner of the traditional arms of the city. The arms are dated 1426 and can be blazoned as: Sable, a double-headed eagle argent, langued, beaked and clawed gules.

For meaning of terms, see A Glossary of Terms used in Heraldry.
As I understand it, there is no copyright on a blazon, but there can be copyrights on drawings made from the blazon. Consequently, the flag could use any artistic interpretation of the double-headed eagle.
We need to show that Leroy's 2002 flag has an acceptable license or we cannot use it.
Glrx (talk) 16:12, 14 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Glrx: Indeed my SVG is a derivative work of the GIF that Arnaud Leroy uploaded. However, I question whether Leroy's image has the modicum of originality that warrants copyright protection in the first place, especially since his work itself must by definition be a copy or close derivative of a public domain work, and how "crowded" the field of eagle-heraldry already is. But I've already placed calls and emails through Flags of the World to try and contact Leroy for licensing or further info, so let's hold off on any action. —RCraig09 (talk) 18:15, 14 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Glrx: Update: I've received word from Flags of the World that Arnaud Leroy has not communicated with them "for many, many years".
- Through further research I've discovered that the historical flag was apparently redrawn ("Redessiné") by Leroy (emblemes.free) as part of a larger project (cyber-flag.net). This history indicates that Leroy merely copied the historical design rather than create his own original design in the manner you seem to describe above. I am trying to contact Leroy through Pascal Vagnat at that project.
- More generally, the more I think about it, I think that choosing a particular feather configuration, beak, and claws is nearly devoid of the originality needed to warrant copyright protection in the first place. (See these Google search results for how crowded the two-headed eagle field is.) —RCraig09 (talk) 19:58, 14 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
- Note also armorialdefrance.fr for the same town--showing both were a close copy of the historical original. —RCraig09 (talk) 20:55, 14 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@RCraig09:
If you trace an image for Commons, you need to show the original image has a free license. Maybe Leroy executed a CC-BY-SA license. If you can show Leroy faithfully copied a free image, then that should suffice. Without something more, the default assumption is that Leroy created the design in 2002.
"More generally, the more I think about it, I think that choosing a particular feather configuration, beak, and claws is nearly devoid of the originality needed to warrant copyright protection in the first place." That is not the way it works. A double-headed eagle is not a simple shape. If someone copies my design, then it violates my copyright. Someone else independently drawing a design that looks close to my double-headed eagle does not violate my copyright. Hundreds of photographers may take similar pictures of a movie star at a press conference; the similarity of the photographs and near lack of originality in taking photos at a press conference does not remove the images from copyright protection.
Moral rights are another issue.
I do not like bringing up these issues, but Commons and WMF want to respect copyrights.
Glrx (talk) 16:38, 15 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
- Thanks for your explanations, and I understand that the WMF goes above and beyond bare legal minimums. I'm not trying to be argumentative, but in this case it's the "redrawn" ("Redessiné") that's mentioned at the emblemes.free link (above) that makes me think Leroy's is the "faithful reproduction" that you describe.
- I'm continuing to pursue contact with Leroy (if he's still living) or the current copyright holder, but as an aside: is it acceptable for a Wikimedian like me to create my own design from scratch based on a general description, and upload it to Commons? It's a well-intended enterprise but intuitively it might come off as a bit spam-like in a way the Commons would reject. Is there a written governing policy or guideline? —RCraig09 (talk) 22:33, 15 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@RCraig09:
I do not read "Redessine" as a copy; it may imply much more. Even the English transliteration to "redraw" does not imply a strict copy. If I google the Coat of Arms of Fouesnant, France, I only get a few designs, and Leroy's design is distinguishable from the others. I do not see a similar eagle at en:Double-headed eagle. Leroy may have copied his double-headed eagle, but we do not know that right now.
As I understand, anyone may create an image from the blazon. It is then her image, and if it is above TOO, then it has a copyright.
One could also use a free image to create the work. It would be a derivative work, and the additions or modifications to the composite would have to be above TOO for the derivative to have its own copyright.
