New uploads by Footlessmouse

Hi, I was wondering if you could look over my new uploads related to E. T. Whittaker. All of them are found in the new category I created for him Category:E. T. Whittaker. In particular, the two book covers may not have been appropriate and I am wondering if they need to be deleted. They are digital rather than photographs of the books, which I think is the problem, but I thought it was alright when I uploaded it as I have seen that in book covers. There is also the colloquium photo, which I am 90% sure I did correctly, but also need to make sure. Anyways, I wish to use these in various articles that I am trying to promote to Good Article status on Wikipedia and need to make sure the licenses are correct, and you seem to know the licensing pretty well. Thank you for your help. Footlessmouse (talk) 21:05, 28 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Footlessmouse: good morning. Most of your uploads look good, but the background on the two modern book covers is sufficiently creative to garner copyright protection: File:A History of the Theories of Aether and Electricity 2nd ed combined cover.jpg, File:Course of Modern Analysis Dover Books third edition reprint cover.jpg. You may be able to use them on English Wikipedia under fair use depending on how you plan to use them. There is a good set of instructions at the bottom of this page: w:Template:Book rationale. Bug

Hi, I don't know why the bot believed it should do this. (France is not in the United States, the 16th and 19th centuries are not between 1925 and 1963, and the status tag for the photo must remain.) I reverted this occurrence, but if the bot has been doing the same thing elsewhere, it should be reverted there also. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:14, 30 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Asclepias: that is definitely a bug. Thanks for the note. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 14:45, 31 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

"Thanks for notifying. Eurostat is the culprit here, if I may say so. Could you kindly add "Category:Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics" to the list of categories to be excluded? Many thanks, and sorry for the trouble. --Zinneke (talk) 23:52, 2 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Help edit MediaWiki:Gadget-HotCat.js/wuu

Hello,

Can you help me to fulfill the edit request on MediaWiki talk:Gadget-HotCat.js/wuu? I've updated the translations, and that page needs an interface administrator to edit. --Lt2818 (talk) 07:03, 9 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hello, I just received this message. My gallery feed is about echinoderms, an important group of sea invertebrates. It seems that there is a Spongebob movie going on, and pictures of the vocal cast have swarmed the gallery due to category updates. If we just remove the "Category:Patrick Star" from the feed, Ogrebot should work normally again.

Sorry for this and thanks in advance,

Images of persons from Societies in which they take part

Hi Magog the Ogre, I was hoping to bug you just once more on your advice for finding a photo for Richard Rothstein. The Economic Policy Institute hosts a picture of him with a button for higher resolution, no blocks on downloading, and no disclaimers for use (and indeed, the same image appears on many other websites). Can it then be uploaded to Commons so we can use it in Wikipedia articles? Thanks for your assistance! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Footlessmouse (talk • contribs) 09:08, 14 November 2020‎ (UTC)Reply

(talk page stalker) @Footlessmouse: there is a copyright notice at the foot of the profile page, and no indication the photo is under a free licence. (Lack of notice used to be a thing in the USA, but is irrelevant to most copyright laws nowadays; we assume everything is protected by copyright and non-free unless there is positive evidence to the contrary.) The image itself has no EXIF data either. I suggest you contact the organization to see if they (or the photographer) can license it for free use and are willing to do so. As for the “many other websites”, lots of people copy stuff without permission—or perhaps with permission but for only that specific use—so this has no bearing on the copyright status.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 19:50, 14 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Footlessmouse: Odysseus is correct. Under modern copyright law, eligible works are automatically protected. However, I have found non-profits are often willing to work with volunteers who send a polite email. Here is a boilerplate with instructions and the relevant legalese: Commons:Email templates. Thank you both! After reading the first message, I ended up finding a video that was CC and already on commons, so I just extracted a still from that and it is now used as Rothstein's picture. The next time I come upon this situation, I will use the boilerplate to ask for permission. (Which I still might do now, as the video frame is not the best picture of him) Thanks again.
