Today we welcome Natalie Culina to the Tattarang family, appointed the new chief executive officer of Akubra. “Some of my earliest memories growing up are of an Akubra hat,” she tells The Sydney Morning Herald. “My father arrived in Australia from Croatia at the age of 23 with barely any English. We were thrilled to welcome our 2024 Australians of the Year, Professor Georgina Long AO and Professor Richard Scolyer AO to our Strand Hatters store in Sydney today.   Professor Long and Professor Scloyer have saved thousands of lives from melanoma. Less than a decade ago, advanced melanoma was fatal – however thanks to Georgina and Richard’s immunotherapy approach, it has become a curable disease.     Professor Long and Professor Scolyer are fierce advocates of sun safety and wearing broad brimmed hats, a cause we proudly support at Akubra.

The rich history of Akubra is imbued in every hat we make. In the 1930s, the Keir family commissioned several artworks by Australian artist Walter Jardine for reproduction on Akubra posters and hatboxes. One of those paintings is now featured on the brand mark of our Riverina, pictured here.
