Quinta Brunson is turning her attention to the movies and will produce, co-write, and star in a comedy feature for Universal called “Par for the Course” that will see the “Abbott Elementary” star act alongside Stephanie Hsu.

Seth Rogen’s Point Grey Pictures will also produce the comedy alongside Brunson, and it’s a mini reunion between the two after Brunson had a part in Rogen’s “An American Pickle.” Alex McAtee is set to produce on behalf of Point Grey under its first-look deal with Universal Pictures. The shelved Coyote vs Acme film may see the light of day after all. Amid industry outcry that WB was shelving yet another film, the studio has begun screening the movie for streaming services. Deadline reports that Prime Video seems to be the frontrunner as far as acquiring the movie goes. The shelving of the completed film has spurred lots of anger within the industry, as unlike the previously shelved Batgirl or Scoob’s Holiday Haunt, Coyote Vs Acme was complete and scheduled for a theatrical release.
Not only that, but reports suggest that the film was testing very well, with composer Steven Price roasting the company on Twitter for their “bizarre anti-art studio shenanigans.”
Had a lot of fun scoring Coyote Vs Acme. As no-one will be able to hear it now, due to bizarre anti-art studio financial shenanigans I will never understand, here is a bit of behind...

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have been an unusual mainstay in popular culture for decades, so they might be seen as occupying an unusual subgenre unto themselves. Originally created in 1984, the Turtles were intended as a satire of the ultra-gritty superhero comics of the time, Frank Miller's "Daredevil" comics in particular. The absurd title and weird premise, however, caught on, and by 1990, the Turtles were starring in TV shows, video games, and a live-action feature film. In 2023, the Turtles are entering what might be their 20th unique continuity with the release of Jeff Rowe's "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem." They have come a long way since their superhero-inflected origins.
"Mutant Mayhem" was co-written and co-produced by Seth Rogen, who also plays the voice of Bebop, a mutant warthog. As a producer, Rogen has had a long, prolific, and quite interesting career. His movies tend to be lightweight...

Though Max is “The One to Watch” for HBO content, the HBO Max-replacement app’s TV library is actually comprised of more Discovery+ shows, according to new data.
Research from streaming-app aggregator Reelgood, shared with IndieWire, states Max’s compilation of 1,208 different series is comprised 55 percent by Discovery+ shows. Forty-two percent of Max series migrated from HBO Max; the remaining 3 percent are new Max exclusives.
Max is a combination of HBO Max and most of the content on Discovery+. (Discovery+ is still available as a standalone app; the ad-free version costs $6.99 per month to Max’s $15.99 per month.)
Episode counts follow a similar pattern. As of May 23, the old HBO Max had 22,191 individual episodes of TV, according to Reelgood. As of May 25, Max has 51,575 episodes. Discovery+ has 59,048 TV episodes.

While some of his jokes haven’t always aged well among some audiences, Seth Rogen, now 39, certainly has. The comedian has racked up hit after hit, starting with the cult favorite series “Freaks and Geeks” in 1999. After minor roles in “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy” to “The 40 Year-Old Virgin,” Rogen proved his leading man prowess with 2007’s “Knocked Up,” followed immediately by the critically acclaimed high-school comedy “Superbad.” Rogen’s affable straight-man persona continued in “Pineapple Express,” “This Is the End,” and “Neighbors,” with more dramatic roles including “50/50,” “Take This Waltz,” and “An American Pickle” adding to Rogen’s prolific and well-rounded career.
As for how some of his sometimes foul-mouthed, politically incorrect comedies have withstood the test of time, Rogen said on “Good Morning Britain” that it’s simply “the nature of comedy” for some humor, especially of his button-pushing variety, to curdle as time progresses...

Seth Rogen is a man of many talents. He’s an actor, writer, weed enthusiast, potter, and maker of movies of varying quality. In addition to starring in critically-acclaimed films like Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans, An American Pickle, and The Lion King, Rogen has acted in his share of clunkers, including Sausage Party, This is the End, Monsters vs. Aliens, and more. Reviews of his projects cover many emotions, with some critics going out of their way to slam some of Rogen’s most memorable films. While some filmmakers are prepared to let the chips fall where they may and permit critics to have their time in the sun, Rogen is clapping back, saying negative reviews can be harmful in ways people don’t anticipate.
Speaking on the Diary of a CEO podcast, Rogen said, “I think if most critics knew how much it hurt the people that made...

Lots of filmmakers push boundaries and raise eyebrows, but not every Hollywood production earns America threats of nuclear warfare. That honor almost exclusively belongs to Seth Rogen's "The Interview," the 2014 movie that poked fun at the famously mercurial North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un. The government of North Korea was so opposed to the release of "The Interview" that it ordered a cyberattack on Sony Pictures' servers, an FBI investigation concluded (per The New York Times).
In the wake of terror threats, "The Interview" was pulled from theaters and released on digital platforms instead, an irregular choice for 2014. The political backlash had real consequences for the movie's release, unlike most other bad press, which rarely prevents films from hitting theaters.

Julia Pott, an animator who serves as the creator on “Summer Camp Island,” has expressed disappointment in HBO Max’s decision to remove the series from its library.
The streamer confirmed plans to remove “Summer Camp Island” and 35 other titles, including 19 more HBO Max originals, from its catalog on Wednesday evening.
“We worked for five years to make 100 episodes of animation. We worked late into the night, we let ourselves go, we were a family of hard working artists who wanted to make something beautiful, and HBO Max just pulled them all like we were nothing,” Pott wrote. “Animation is not nothing!”

HBO Max has removed at least a half-dozen Warner Bros. movies made specifically for HBO Max, IndieWire has confirmed — and more cuts are coming.
“Moonshot” starring Cole Sprouse and Zach Braff, “Superintelligence” starring Melissa McCarthy (and written by her husband Ben Falcone), the 2020 remake of “The Witches,” “An American Pickle” starring Seth Rogen, “Locked Down” starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Anne Hathaway, and Sundance title “Charm City Kings” were the ones noticeably scrubbed from HBO Max over the past few months. Also permanently benched was LeBron James and Maverick Carter’s “House Party” reboot, which was slated to premiere July 28 on HBO Max but was never released.
A person with knowledge of the decision told IndieWire the six movies in question, as first discussed on a Reddit thread and reported by Variety, are part of a long list of films and series being pulled off HBO Max and Discovery+ as Warner Bros.

The fallout from the surprise shelving of DC’s “Batgirl” continues, as at least six different movies billed as Max Original films have been quietly removed from HBO Max in recent days.
Some eagle-eyed Reddit viewers were first to notice the absence of the titles, all of which were exclusively released for streaming and skipped theaters. Those movies include the Anne Hathaway films “The Witches” and “Locked Down,” the Melissa McCarthy comedy “Superintelligence,” the Seth Rogen comedy “An American Pickle,” the Dylan Sprouse sci-fi romance “Moonshot” and the Sundance drama “Charm City Kings.”
Additionally, a remake of “House Party” from LeBron James’ Springhill Entertainment that was originally meant to debut on HBO Max on July 28 did not launch and was scrubbed from the release calendar.
Reps for HBO Max did not respond to a request for comment.

Warner Bros. Discovery has been quietly culling content from HBO Max — including several Warner Bros. movies that were exclusively streaming on the service — in what appears to be an effort to cut costs.

What do you get when you combine a couple of comedy legends?
“Being Mortal” will soon provide the answer to that particular equation. The film, which marks the directorial debut of Aziz Ansari, has added Seth Rogen to its cast. He joins the previously announced Bill Murray, who will star alongside Ansari.

The film is based on Atul Gawande’s non-fiction book, “Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End,” which admittedly doesn’t sound like a laugh riot. Principal photography will start this April, with Searchlight Pictures set to release the film theatrically in 2023.
Rogen can currently be seen in Hulu’s “Pam & Tommy” starring Lily James and Sebastian Stan. He recently...

Sony Pictures Animation and Amazon are nearing deal for over $100 million for the animated feature “Hotel Transylvania: Transformania” to stream globally on Amazon Prime Video, Variety has learned exclusively.
“Hotel Transylvania” has been a monster family franchise for Sony, with the first three films grossing more than $1.3 billion in theaters worldwide since 2012. But the surge in Covid cases — driven by the highly contagious delta variant predominantly infecting unvaccinated people — has made theatrical exhibition of family pics untenable since there is no vaccine yet for children under 12. With New York City enacting a vaccine mandate for indoor venues on Tuesday, and other major cities seriously considering their own, sources say that in early August, Sony began exploring an alternative release for the fourth “Hotel Transylvania” movie, which had been slated to open in theaters on Oct. 1.

Last Year’s Winner: “Bad Education”
Still Eligible: No.
Hot Streak: After three years in a row, 2020 marked “Black Mirror’s” first loss in the category since it started submitting episodes as TV Movies in 2017. “Bad Education’s” win was the first for HBO since 2015, when “Bessie” was the fourth film in a row to win for the network. With an “Oslo” win in 2021, a new streak could begin.
Fun Fact: Movies being a standalone piece of entertainment, only one program has more than one win in this category: “Black Mirror.” But “Sherlock” is the most nominated program (with four nods) and the 2016 entry (“Sherlock: The Abominable Bride”) represents the first PBS movie to win the category since 1971, when “The Andersonville Trial” beat out four NBC nominees.
Notable Ineligible Movies: “An American Pickle” (HBO Max submitted the film at the Oscars); the entire HBO Max/Warner Bros. film slate, from...

Seth Rogen says that Paul Rudd’s laughter gave away the prank massage the Ant-Man actor pulled in Las Vegas, which was revealed by the An American Pickle star over Twitter in July.

Remember when National Geographic’s “Free Solo” won the Academy Award for documentary in 2018 and then went on to win six Emmys, including directing for a documentary/nonfiction program? Or when ESPN’s “O.J.: Made in America” did the same thing in 2016?
The loophole that allowed docs to somehow compete in both Oscars and Emmys was always a bit bizarre. It couldn’t happen in scripted, where the rules have been ironclad: If you were released theatrically first, you’re a movie; if you’re on television, you’re, well, TV.
In documentary, though, it’s often TV outlets such as HBO, PBS or Nat Geo commissioning and funding the projects to air on their networks — making them, arguably, TV projects. But if they’re screened in theaters, the Oscars can claim them too. “Why a television documentary is eligible for AMPAS’ feature awards is a question for AMPAS,” the...

Sony’s retelling of “Cinderella,” starring Camila Cabello as the classic princess, is skipping its planned theatrical debut. The film will instead premiere on Amazon Prime Video later this year.
It’s unclear when the movie, which had already been delayed once due to the pandemic, will land on the streaming platform.
Sony originally intended to open “Cinderella” on the big screen this July, but the studio opted to license the film to Amazon Prime because movie theater attendance has not returned to pre-pandemic levels. Sony will retain rights in China.
As the box office attempts to rebound following Covid-19, Sony has siphoned off nearly all of its movies that don’t feature an otherworldly superhero. The studio announced in April that “Vivo,” an animated musical with songs from “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, would premiere on Netflix instead of multiplexes. Seth Rogen has joined Steven Spielberg’s upcoming film based on his childhood in Arizona, Variety has confirmed.
Rogen will take on the role of Spielberg’s favorite uncle in the untitled film. As previously reported, Michelle Williams is in talks to play a major part as well.

Spielberg co-wrote the script with Tony Kushner, who he has previously worked with on “West Side Story,” “Munich” and “Lincoln.” Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the film will focus on a young protagonist growing up in Phoenix, Ariz. in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and will examine the character’s relationship with his parents throughout different time periods.

Kevin Hart’s upcoming drama “Fatherhood” will fittingly premiere on Netflix on Father’s Day weekend.
The film, directed by Paul Weitz, was originally set up at Sony Pictures and slated to release theatrically on April 16. However, the studio has negotiated a licensing deal with Netflix (excluding China) as nearly 50% of U.S. cinemas remain shuttered due to the coronavirus pandemic. “Fatherhood” will now debut on the streaming platform on June 18.
With the move to Netflix, Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company Higher Ground have boarded the movie. Dana Stevens wrote the script with Weitz.
Sony has offloaded a few films during the pandemic, including Seth Rogen’s “An American Pickle” to HBO Max and the Kristen Stewart-led romantic comedy “Happiest Season” to Hulu. At the same time, Netflix has been an active buyer, acquiring titles like Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” romantic comedy...

Warner Bros. is returning to a world of pure imagination, forging ahead with plans for a “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” prequel, newly titled “Wonka.”
The project has been in development for years, but recently started to pick up steam again. The studio hopes to begin casting the film soon, with the goal of releasing it theatrically on March 17, 2023.
David Heyman, whose resume includes the “Harry Potter” franchise and “Paddington,” is producing the film, based on a script by Simon Rich. They have both been attached to the movie since 2016. Rich previously worked as a writer on “Saturday Night Live” and penned Seth Rogen’s latest pic, “An American Pickle,” which was based on Rich’s New Yorker short story titled “Sell Out.” Paul King, who directed “Paddington” and its sequel, will helm the reboot. Simon Farnaby co-wrote the script.

Here we go again. Late last year, Warner Bros. was skewered after announcing that all of its new movies in 2021 would debut simultaneously on HBO Max and in theaters. Cinema operators, rival studios and even some of the filmmakers behind the movies wondered aloud why, with the prospect of coronavirus vaccines looming, Warner Bros. would make such a sweeping decision? It was a move that appeared to wave the white flag on moviegoing for the next 12 months.
Nobody expected mass immunization overnight, but with vaccinations being administered at a crawl in the U.S., it now looks like Warner Bros. may have been forward-thinking in acknowledging the box office’s slow return. Numerous films remain on the release calendar for early 2021, yet cases of the virus in many areas are higher than ever and approximately 65% of U.S. theaters — including those in popular markets like New York and Los Angeles — remain closed.

Seth Rogen pulls double duty in this bittersweet fish-out-of-water comedy based on an acclaimed short story by comic writer Simon Rich. It’s an entertaining, oddly touching picture that finds Rogen on top form, twice.
Opening in the fictional Polish shtetl of Schlupsk, An American Pickle centres on lowly, bearded ditch-digger Herschel Greenbaum (Rogen), who moves to America with his pregnant wife Sarah (Succession‘s Sarah Snook) after one too many attacks by Jew-hating Cossacks. Herschel gets a job as a rat-basher in a pickle factory, but accidentally falls into a vat of pickles, just as the factory is closed down.
100 years later, Herschel wakes up, the pickle brine having miraculously kept him alive. He is dismayed to discover that his only living relative is his great-grandson Ben Greenbaum...

When I wrote the holiday movie guide “Have Yourself a Movie Little Christmas” a decade ago — and bemoaned the lack of LGBT stories being told in the seasonal sub-genre — I never could have predicted the bumper crop of 2020, which is offering queer-centric (or at least gay-inclusive) new movies from Lifetime, Hallmark, Paramount Network, and Netflix, as well as the arrival of “Happiest Season,” an all-star Christmas comedy with a major studio behind it.
“Happiest Season” isn’t the kind of “inclusive” movie where someone went through a heterosexual script with the find-replace function and changed the gender of one of the leads; this is a film in which identity, family, and the closet represents a major through-line. That it does so in the trappings of a Christmas farce may take some viewers aback, but director Clea Duvall (who co-wrote with Mary Holland) takes the serious parts seriously, but not so...

Lionsgate Developing Horror Film ‘Video Nasty’ With Seth Rogen, Greg Silverman Producing (Exclusive)
Lionsgate has acquired the horror spec script “Video Nasty” for Seth Rogen’s Point Grey and Greg Silverman’s Stampede Ventures to produce, Variety has learned exclusively.
“Video Nasty,” written by Chris Thomas Devlin, centers on three teens who rent a cursed VHS and are pulled into an ’80s slasher movie that threatens to trap them forever. Point Grey’s Rogen, Evan Goldberg, Josh Fagen and James Weaver will produce along with Stampede Ventures’ Silverman and Jon Berg.
While no deal is in place, “50/50” director Jonathan Levine is eyeing the project to possibly direct and produce along with his producing partner Gillian Bohrer. The awards landscape is saturated with multiple voting bodies and critics groups naming their favorite movies of the year. As is tradition, the IFP Gotham Awards will be the first to reveal its nominations on Nov. 12, celebrating its 30th anniversary. In the past, the group has been a viable launching pad for films that have gone on to win best picture at the Oscars such as “Birdman,” “Spotlight” and “Moonlight.” IFP is planning a hybrid show at its usual Cipriani Wall Street venue in January.
With the Covid-19 pandemic decimating the movie industry, the Gotham Awards will take on an even more important role this year in establishing the narrative for a very unusual award season.

Photo: Synchronic/Well Go USA Entertainment 2020 has been quite the year for time travel stories. Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti battled millennial ennui in a Groundhog Day-style time loop in Hulu’s Palm Springs. Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter reunited to recruit history’s greatest musicians and defeat an apocalypse of cynicism in Bill and Ted Face the Music. In An American Pickle, Seth Rogen helped make reparations for his turn-of-the-century Jewish ancestor, who was fantastically preserved into the 21st century after falling into a pickle vat. Christopher Nolan pitted John David Washington and Robert Pattinson against a shadowy terrorist cell from the future attempting to end the world by traveling back in time in Tenet. Perhaps screenwriters in 2019 found it too tempting to resist the once in a lifetime opportunity to literalize the phrase “hindsight is 2020.” Or perhaps, after years of facing the three historic crises of climate change,...

Photo: 'An American Pickle'/HBO Max “Come on, flip the pickle, Morty, you're not gonna regret it. The payoff is huge. I turned myself into a pickle, Morty!” In a time where people fear the churning of remakes and a lack of originality in Hollywood, it’s movies like 'An American Pickle' that make us appreciate some of the courageously inventive narratives that are gushing out in 2020. Based on the short story by Simon Rich, this film definitely meets expectations concerning creative plots. Set in the year 1919, Seth Rogen plays Herschel, (a straining Jewish labor worker) who migrates with his wife to New York from his small town (or shtetl) in Eastern Europe after some Russian Cossacks ransack the place. He gets a job at a pickle factory and hopes to save enough for a proper place of rest for him and his wife at a Jewish Cemetery when the time comes.

Writer Simon Rich, who counts Seth Rogen (for “An American Pickle”) and Lorne Michaels (for “Miracle Workers” and “Man Seeking Woman”) among his collaborators and Seth Meyers and John Mulaney among his friends, hasn’t had trouble staying productive during the pandemic.
“It’s much easier to be a fiction writer than a feature director right now,” he observes.
The rest of the world may be filled with existential dread, but Rich, whose resume includes “Saturday Night Live” and Pixar, is focusing on pirates, bears… or anything that might make a good subject for one of his numerous short stories. “I’ve never written about topical subjects, so it hasn’t affected my work at all,” he says. “I just write about [made-up] things, no matter what’s happening in the actual world.”
His short stories and novels have been the foundation for TV shows including “Man Seeking Woman” and “Miracle Workers.

‘The Secret Garden.’
Exhibitors despaired as none of the new releases last weekend could catch the fourth frame of Warner Bros’ crowd-pleaser Tenet and no title cracked $1 million.
Positioned to cash in on school vacations which are underway in Queensland and start in other states this weekend, Universal’s Trolls World Tour launched brightly after several weeks of paid previews.
Studiocanal’s The Secret Garden, the fourth adaptation of the Frances Hodgson Burnett novel, was less luminous but will hit its stride when kids are on holiday.
Sony Pictures’ The Broken Hearts Gallery is an appealing, well-crafted rom-com but it won few hearts, mirroring its meagre results in the US.
Palace’s French whodunit The Translators was the stand-out limited release while first-time feature director Hayley MacFarlane’s Swimming for Gold did Ok.
Some programmers questioned why WB bothered to release An American Pickle, given the Seth Rogen-headlined comedy...

Sarah Snook, the Emmy-nominated actress from HBO’s hit drama “Succession,” has signed on to star in an adaptation of Jane Austen’s final novel, “Persuasion.”
The movie, from Searchlight Pictures, will be directed by Mahalia Belo. Published in 1817 after Austen’s death, “Persuasion” centers on Anne Elliot, a 27-year-old whose family moves to lower their expenses. In the meantime, they rent their home to an Admiral and his wife. The wife’s brother, a Navy captain, had been engaged to Anne Elliot (who will be portrayed by Snook), but they have had no contact in more than seven years when they meet again.
Jessica Swale, whose credits include “Summerland,” will pen the screenplay.
Alison Own and Debra Hayward are producing the film through their Monumental Pictures banner. BBC Films is co-financing the drama. Katie Goodson-Thomas is overseeing the project for the studio, as well ass Pete Spencer and manager Apolline Berty.

In a keynote session Monday at NATPE’s Streaming Plus virtual conference, WarnerMedia’s Michael Quigley pushed back on the perception that HBO Max has been a bit light on original content.
“There was some chatter about ‘only’ six originals at launch,” the EVP of content acquisitions said. “I think what’s been lost is that since that time, we’ve steadily introduced new shows, new movies, new content to the platform over the course of the summer. We wanted to create the feeling among consumers that each week they’re going to find something new.”
There are now 30 original titles on HBO Max, which launched May 27, and there will be 36 by the end of September, Quigley said. The service offers 10,000 hours of overall programming, which includes the same HBO offering available via pay-tv and a separate stand-alone streaming service, plus titles from Warner Bros, Adult Swim, Turner Classic and other brands.

One of the most expensive streaming services on the market just got a bit cheaper…for a few weeks.
WarnerMedia will begin offering its HBO Max streamer for $11.99 per month for the next 12 months, several dollars cheaper than its standard $14.99 per month price. The deal will be available to new customers and returning customers whose subscriptions have lapsed. The “Save for 12” promotion begins on Friday and runs through September 25. The offer is available via HBO Max’s website and through platforms such as iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Apple TV, and via Google, Hulu, YouTube TV, Xfinity, Rcn, Grande Communications and Wave .
Though critics praised HBO Max’s large launch library shortly after the streaming service launched in late May, WarnerMedia’s new streamer has also faced several challenges. Like competing streamers’ titles, production on HBO Max’s various original film and television projects has been disrupted by the ongoing...
