Ron Howard’s Jim Henson Idea Man led all comers in the documentary categories as the nominations for the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards were announced, racking up eight altogether, three more than the next most-nominated doc.
Among its nominations are Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special, Outstanding Directing for a Documentary/Nonfiction Program for Howard, recognition for writer Mark Monroe, cinematographers Igor Martinovic and Vanja Cernjul, picture editors Sierra Neal and Paul Crowder, the film’s sound editing and sound mixing teams, as well as David Fleming’s score.
“We’re so thrilled. What an honor from the Academy,” said Imagine Documentaries President Sara Bernstein, herself nominated for producing Jim Henson Idea Man. “We’re so excited.”

ABC News Studios is teaming up with Imagine Documentaries to tell the story of Barbara Walters, the legendary broadcast journalist, anchor and host who died in 2022. Emmy winner Jackie Jesko is set to direct the film, which will debut on Hulu in 2025.
The untitled doc will chronicle Walters’ entire groundbreaking career, which started at NBC’s Wnbt in the 1950s and led to “Today,” where she was the show’s first female co-host. Walters then made history by joining the “ABC Evening News” as the first female network news anchor, and at the time the highest-paid of anyone in history. Walters then became known for “Barbara Walters Specials,” in which she landed some of the biggest gets in all of interview jounalism; she also co-anchored “20/20” and then created “The View” — which she anchored until retiring.

If you were to learn that Disney+, from the company that owns the work created by the late Jim Henson, was broadcasting a documentary about the visionary puppeteer and filmmaker and that doc was being directed by Ron Howard with substantial input from Henson’s family, you could probably guess what the movie would be like.
And you’d be right.
In this case, though, there’s nothing wrong with a little predictability. Henson and Howard are a fine match, and the sort of film you’d expect Ron Howard to make – straightforward, skillful, honest and sympathetic – is pretty much the kind of movie you’d want about Jim Henson.
There are surprises in “Jim Henson Idea Man,” which had its world premiere on Saturday night in the Cannes Classics section of the Cannes Film Festival. But there’s nothing shocking, nothing earthshaking about this portrait of the man who gave us Big Bird,...

Exclusive: Imagine Entertainment co-chairmen Brian Grazer and Ron Howard have entered into a multi-year co-financing and production partnership with Fifth Season and their co-CEOs Graham Taylor and Chris Rice.

Imagine Documentaries, the non-fiction branch of Ron Howard and Brian Grazer’s Imagine Entertainment, is looking to boost a new generation of documentary talent.
Speaking at a panel at Rome’s Mia Market, Imagine Documentaries president Sara Bernstein revealed that her company has signed a development deal with filmmakers Isabel Bethencourt and Parker Hill, whose teenagers-in-Texas portrait “Cusp” premiered to critical acclaim at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, while praising director Jackie Jesko, whose three-part, true-crime doc “Savior Complex” premiered on HBO last month.
“It’s important to champion and make room for the next generation,” said Bernstein, heralding Bethencourt and Hill’s film as “one of the best cinema verité style docs I’d seen in a long time.”
“I thought it was incredibly riveting,” Bernstein continued. “[And] we’re always looking at those filmmakers… [because] it’s exciting to think about the next generation, to ask who’s up and coming.

While “My Next Guest With David Letterman” executive producers had previously pulled off intimate sit-downs with culture-makers like Barack Obama, Malala Yousafzai and Cardi B, producing an in-depth conversation in a Ukrainian war zone was certainly not in their repertoire before pursuing an interview with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The idea to interview Zelenskyy started with producer Tommy Alter, and scored Letterman’s immediate enthusiasm as the host told EP Tom Keaney, “this is the only thing I want to do.”
“I think Dave’s immediate reaction was probably generated by the fact that this is a world event that’s happening in real time,” EP and Imagine president Justin Wilkes told TheWrap, adding that it was “still fairly early days in the war.” “He’s one of the most interesting people on the planet right now, and wouldn’t it be interesting to go talk to him and see...

The texts were ringing like crazy this morning. “Are you in Maui? Are you okay?” Fortunately, yes, just fine. But Maui, the second-biggest Island in Hawaii, continues to fight massive wildfires that started Tuesday and virtually destroyed the classic town of Lahaina (capital of Hawaii at one time) and a tourist mecca.
Flames have reportedly destroyed hundreds of homes and some businesses in a paradise that has long been a favorite getaway — and even home for many entertainment luminaries, including Oprah Winfrey, Clint Eastwood, Steven Tyler, Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson, Kris Kristofferson and Jeff Bezos, among many more. Mick Fleetwood not only lives on the island, but has a popular restaurant, Fleetwood’s On Front Street, that was situated right in the path of where the fire was most fierce in picturesque Lahaina, a city described now as looking like a bombed-out war zone.

The days of elastic budgets are over. The documentary arena is feeling the great contraction in the volume of content ordered by the largest networks and streamers as the entertainment industry reckons with its spending binge of the past decade.
The high-end nonfiction and documentary production community benefited enormously from the spike in demand for episodic series and evergreen films. In recent months, filmmakers, producers and buyers say strictures have tightened on producers to deliver highly accessible, easily promotable documentary content.
“Crime, food, music sports”: that’s how director and cinematographer Nicola Marsh describes the hot subject areas for docu makers in the present writers strike-disrupted marketplace.
Despite the momentarily sluggishness, spending on nonfiction and documentary content by the largest platforms is only poised to grow. These genres are too important to offset scripted programs and fill out a service with a varied content menu to keep subscribers in the tent.

Clouds of gloom have settled over much of the documentary field, brought on by multiple factors: a sluggish acquisition market, cutbacks in the executive ranks at Netflix and Showtime, uncertainty around Hulu’s future, CNN Films taking doc production in house, sharper scrutiny of budgets and content needs, and… well, the list goes on.
But there’s at least one bright spot it the nonfiction firmament – National Geographic Documentary Films. Coming off its latest Oscar nomination – for the feature Fire of Love – the unit of the Walt Disney Company is leaning into documentary production with half a dozen films set for release or in the works.
First up: Wild Life, a film Carolyn Bernstein, EVP of global scripted content and documentary films for NatGeo, calls “a big, beautiful love story.” The couple at the heart of it – Doug and Kris Tompkins — left the corporate world for life in remote Chile.

It’s been a good year for several documentary filmmakers who sought and found distribution for independently made projects at major festivals. But for many nonfiction helmers, this year’s festival circuit hasn’t proven to be as fruitful as it once was.
Pre-pandemic, streaming services went to film fests to fill their slates, but now with media conglomerates consolidating, brands merging, and Netflix tightening its wallet, film fest documentary shopping sprees have slowed down. On top of mergers and economic unease, there’s been an increase in streamers like Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Apple, and Disney either pre-buying docus or commissioning their own nonfiction projects.
Some of this year’s fest favorites were commissioned docus, including Tia Lessin and Emma Pildes’ ‘The Janes” (HBO), W. Kamau Bell’s “We Need to Talk About Cosby” (Showtime), Rory Kennedy’s “Downfall: The Case Against Boeing” (Netflix), and Ron Howard’s “We Feed People...

In July, “We Feed People,” Ron Howard’s National Geographic documentary about celebrity chef José Andrés and his nonprofit World Central Kitchen, received two Emmy nominations.
That same month, World Central Kitchen, which cooks and delivers food to people in need following social and environmental disasters, continued its humanitarian response to the war in Ukraine. The org has set up more than 5,000 distribution points and has served more than 100 million meals since entering the country in February.

In producing the documentary, “We Feed People,” Sara Bernstein was very taken by the philosophy that José Andrés brings to food, that just one plate matters. “I think that comfort food really makes all the difference for people who are surviving natural disaster and other conflicts like what’s happening in Ukraine. World Central Kitchen has been there serving 1.8 million meals daily around the region,” she tells Gold Derby during our Meet the Experts: TV Documentary panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). She adds that the organization has really helped to reframe how we feed people in dire situations. “They need a warm meal. They don’t just need what had traditionally been served to them in relief efforts, which were just dried food.”

As wildfires burn in Northern California, World Central Kitchen is there, providing emergency food relief. Likewise in Spain, it has responded to devastating wildfires that flared in July. You’ll find Wck in Ukraine, feeding countless souls affected by Russia’s brutal invasion.
Whether it’s in response to natural disasters or manmade catastrophes, World Central Kitchen springs into action to meet urgent human needs.

Over the course of an engaging (if inevitably repetitive) two and a half hours, “Thirteen Lives” reenacts the incredible rescue effort that captured the world’s attention for several weeks in the summer of 2018: Twelve boys and the assistant coach of a Thai soccer team went exploring the Tham Luang cave when an unforeseen rainstorm forced them deeper and deeper. What should have been a reasonably easy hike instead became a near-death experience, as rising waters and an early monsoon season left them stranded for days, until a handful of the world’s most experienced divers arrived on the scene.
International news coverage ensured that audiences around the globe were aware of the situation, but far fewer know just what it took to get those kids to safety — which explains why this feel-good story has inspired multiple films, from “The Rescue” to “The Cave,” with an even more “authentic...

Spanish native José Andrés became one of the most celebrated chefs in the world, popularizing tapas – small plate dining – in America. But of late he’s been focusing on comfort food. Comfort food in the truest sense, the kind the nonprofit he founded, World Central Kitchen, makes for people in times of disaster.
“Food relief is not just a meal that keeps hunger away. It’s a plate of hope,” Andrés declares on the Wck website. “It tells you in your darkest hour that someone, somewhere, cares about you. This is the real meaning of comfort food.”
Andrés’ remarkable journey from high-profile chef to humanitarian on a global scale is told in the documentary We Feed People, directed by Oscar winner Ron Howard. The National Geographic film, now streaming on Disney+, is a contender for Emmy nominations in multiple categories.

Ron Howard had a backup plan in case his filmmaking aspirations didn’t pan out as an adult. “I probably would’ve been a high school history teacher and maybe the basketball coach or something if I didn’t transition from a kid career and get to fulfill my dreams, which I was lucky enough to be able to do,” the “We Feed People” director tells Gold Derby at during our Meet the Experts: Documentary group discussion with James Honeyborne (“Our Great National Parks”), Rick Murray (“Janet Jackson”) and Amy Poehler (“Lucy and Desi”). “I’ve always been curious, always interested, so there’s that part of it — this discovery.” Watch the exclusive video interview above. Ron Howard first heard about José Andrés‘ World Central Kitchen, a nonprofit that provides meals to areas affected by natural disasters, about seven years ago when both were speakers at a conference. The Oscar winner found the chef and humanitarian “inspiring, entertaining,” but it wasn’t until Howard was working on another documentary that the idea to document Andrés and Wck for what would become Disney+’s “We Feed People” was born.
‘When I was doing the documentary ‘Rebuilding Paradise’ [about wildfires in Paradise, Calif.], José shows up in it. I wasn’t there when we covered him, but he was there as part of the relief effort,” Howard tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Experts: Documentary panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). “Louisa Velis, who’s one of the executive producers of both ‘Rebuilding Paradise’ and ‘We Feed People,’ she and I were looking at the cut and she said, ‘José Andrés,...

This review of “We Feed People” was first published March 19, 2022, after its premiere at the SXSW Film Festival.
Though he is just one man, José Andrés has the energy and drive of dozens. After arriving in New York from Spain in 1991, his outsized talents and personality propelled him to fame as one of the first modern celebrity chefs. His D.C. hotspot Jaleo kicked off an expansion that eventually encompassed around 30 restaurants, cookbooks, a range of kitchen products, classes at major universities and TV appearances.
But as Ron Howard chronicles in “We Feed People,” the closer Andrés got to having it all, the more aware he became of how many others had nothing.
Andrés’ Ngo, World Central Kitchen, started in 2010 but kicked into high gear in 2017 in response to Puerto Rico’s Hurricane Maria. When he faced bureaucratic obstacles from government organizations he pushed them aside impatiently, in a quest to establish his own,...

Some directors make movies about heroes wearing capes; Oscar-winner Ron Howard prefers to make them about heroes in kitchen aprons, as he does with Disney+‘s We Feed People. The inspiring documentary spotlights celebrity chef José Andrés‘ World Central Kitchen organization, which for 12 years has fed hungry communities impacted by some of the worst disasters the world has ever seen. “[Andrés brings] entrepreneurial spirit and problem-solving under pressure,” says Howard, who captured the impassioned chef and his team feeding folks in places like Haiti, Puerto Rico, and even closer to home in New York City during the Covid pandemic. We Feed People also provides insight into Andrés’ family life and relentless drive while showing he doesn’t do it alone. “The film really is a story of volunteerism,” the filmmaker explains. “It just starts with José.” Watch for more details about the ...

Chicago – Doc10, the yearly Chicago documentary film festival, is on the Final Day on May 22nd, 2022, with the films (click links) Nalvalny, A House Made Of Splinters (4pm), and We Feed People (7pm).
Rating: 5.0/5.0
”Nalvany” is the story of Alexei Nalvany, the highest profile anti-Putin activist in Russia, has been familiar in current events, especially a mysterious poisoning which led to his exile. But the reasons for his actions are ardently revealed in the documentary “Navalny,” the U.S. Audience Award honoree at Sundance. Navalny ran for President against Putin, was the the founder of the Anti Corruption Foundation in Mother Russia and has been a constant thorn in Vladimir’s side … so much so that Putin never refers to him by name. The main story in the doc is the amazing online support that Navalny receives, including organizations that helped him uncover (quite remarkably) the circumstances of his poisoning.

Following Doc10 Film Festival’s opening night screening of “The Janes” on May 19, several original members The Jane Collective — an underground abortion clinic led by women in the pre-Roe v. “The fight is not over,” said Marie Leaner, a former Jane. “It’s only just begun.”

Stephen Colbert joked that Ron Howard had finally made his first superhero movie. The statement, however, is actually rather accurate.
In “We Feed People,” Howard chronicles José Andrés’ journey from glitzy James Beard Award-winning chef (the Oscars’ culinary equivalent) to scrappy DIY humanitarian aid activist. It mightn’t scream “Marvel origin story,” but it has all the ingredients (pun intended).

Marvel has continued to have its fun on Disney+ with Moon Knight currently plugging away through its six episode season. With its list of new releases for May 2022, however, Disney+ is making clear that it’s time for some more Star Wars.
The biggest title this month is undoubtedly Obi-Wan Kenobi with two episodes premiering on May 27. Ewan McGregor reprises his role from the Star Wars prequel films to portray the beloved last Jedi (for now) in the six-episode series. Details about the plot are already starting to trickle out so steer clear as best you can if you want an unspoiled experience. But if you want to know what other Star Wars characters might be cameoing, we have you covered over here.
That and the Moon Knight finale on May 4 is all she wrote for Disney’s big franchises this month. There are still some other cool options to consider.

It may sound counterintuitive at best, tone-deaf at worse, to label a documentary focused on food providers aiding people in the wake of disasters as a feel-good movie. But that’s an honest, accurate and, yes, appreciative label for “.

After spending 90 minutes watching major league celebrity chef Jose Andres hustling to deliver food to desperate people in far-flung corners of the globe, it’s almost shocking to see him being tripped up simply because his little plane has run out of gas.
