Monte Carlo's have been synonymous with racing for a very long time in the United States and abroad. Chevrolet did the name swap to fire Indians (both at home and NRIs) up about the Chevrolet Aveo.
In 8 years of successful racing, RV drives the exact same car (the Chevy Aveo, which didn't exist back then), with the same endorsements.
The movie starts at (Present Day - 1 Year), at the race where RV crashes his car. At that point, we flash back 8 years prior, where he started his career and meets Shona. In the NYC of 9 years ago, the city looks identical to the present day, including advertisements for currently playing Broadway shows.
