Father and son Eugene and Dan Levy did a respectable job of hosting the 2024 Primetime Emmys, popping in just enough throughout the two-hour running time to guide the show without overstaying their welcome. Their opening bit avoided any controversial topics, and Dan Levy got a big laugh when he described the Emmys as broadcast TV’s biggest night for honoring movie stars on streaming services. Eugene also earned solid applause when he joked, “In the true spirit of The Bear, we will not be making any jokes,” while addressing the show’s controversial classification as a comedy.
Speaking of The Bear, the series was awarded four Emmys during the broadcast in the Actor (Jeremy Allen White), Supporting Actor (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), Supporting Actress (Liza Colón-Zayas), and Outstanding Directing categories. But Hacks pulled off a surprise win, snagging the Comedy Series Emmy.

The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards just aired on ABC, and things went about as expected. In other words, the excellent historical drama Shōgun won Best Drama Series; the caustic slice-of-life series The Bear won Best Comedy Series, since I guess it's a little more like a comedy than Shōgun; and the autobiographical stalker drama Baby Reindeer won Best Limited or Anthology Series.
Those three were the big winners of the night, with them each taking home four awards. Jeremy Allen White won Best Actor In A Comedy Series as expected, and his costar Ebon Moss-Bachrach won Best Supporting Actor. On the drama side, Hiroyuki Sanada won Best Actor and Anna Sawai won Best Actress; she was the one I was really invested in. She was magnificent as Mariko and if she hadn't won I would have been forced to write a strongly worded letter to whoever votes in these things.

FX’s Shogun and The Bear dominated the 76th Emmys in Los Angeles on Sunday night as they finished with 18 and 11 wins apiece, including last weekend’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards, despite an upset in the comedy series category where HBO/Max’s Hacks was the surprise winner.
Shogun was named best dramatic series and took home both lead acting wins for Hiroyuku Sanada and Anna Sawai, who became the first actress of Asian descent to win the category. The show itself became the first mostly not in the English language to win the series award.

Only eight months after the last Emmy ceremony (which was delayed due to the strikes), the Primetime Emmy Awards are back, although there were some big surprises in store. Everyone (myself included) expected The Bear to own every category it was nominated in. While it did well, winning many big categories including Best Actor in a Comedy Series, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress, it lost Best Comedy Series (and actress) to Hacks.
Netflix’s controversial limited series Baby Reindeer also cleaned up, nabbing awards for star and creator Richard Gadd plus co-star Jessica Gunning. But, FX was the evening’s big winner, with their epic series, Shogun, dominating the drama categories, with the great Hiroyuki Sanada winning the prize for Best Actor, and Anna Sawai taking Best Actress, alongside the show’s Best Drama win. If you don’t have streaming and if you didn’t watch one of the 33 shows nominated out of the 516 scripted programs available in the US, you probably didn’t think much of the show.
But we’re still here rounding up the winners, so you didn’t have to watch. You’re welcome! Maybe the award winners will inspire you to watch a show you never have before.

When Billy Crudup took to the Emmy stage to accept his second Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series win for the role of Cory Ellison in Apple TV+ series The Morning Show, his first thought was for his wife — and fellow nominee — Naomi Watts.
“I’m happy to be here with my piece of eye candy there, my wife,” he said after an initial thank you. He also noted, in a seemingly political aside, that “she happens to be an immigrant,” and went on to champion her for her “searing performance this year for which she’s nominated,” referring to her lead role of Babe Paley in anthology series Feud: Capote vs. the Swans.
In The Morning Show, Crudup’s role of network president Cory, for which he has been nominated three times, has involved everything from singing showtunes in Season 1, to unrequited love, Machiavellian meltdowns, and heartbreaking vulnerability...

Elizbeth Debicki topped a royal run for The Crown with her win in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series category and became the first Australian actress to do so in the process.
Debicki, who played Diana, Princess of Wales, in the final two seasons of Netflix’s drama series, won at the second time of calling, having been beaten last year by Jennifer Coolidge for her turn as Tanya in The White Lotus.
This year, she beat her co-star Lesley Manville, who played Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, The Morning Show quadruplet of Nicole Beharie, Greta Lee, Karen Pittman and Holland Taylor as well as The Gilded Age’s Christine Baranski.

Debicki said that she didn’t write a speech because she’s “really superstitious” and was in a “real pickle.

“The Crown” is going out on a high note.
Elizabeth Debicki won the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series Emmy for her role as Princess Diana in Netflix’s “The Crown.” Debicki was nominated but did not win last year for the fifth season (the statue went to Jennifer Coolidge for “The White Lotus”).
Debicki beat out fellow nominees Christine Baranski (“The Gilded Age”), Nicole Beharie (“The Morning Show”), Greta Lee (“The Morning Show”), Lesley Manville (“The Crown”), Karen Pittman (Mia Jordan), and Holland Taylor (“The Morning Show”).
The statue adds to “The Crown’s” massive Emmy haul over the years: Prior to Sunday’s ceremony, the six-season drama won 21 Emmys, including one for Emma Corrin, who portrayed a younger Princess Diana in Season 4 of the show.

It’s television’s biggest night, and it’s posed to be a record-breaking one if contenders like “Shōgun” and “The Bear” continue expected sweeps.
The way of things was signaled at the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys September 7 and 8 when “Shōgun” broke records grabbing 14 trophies, sweeping every category except the main title theme and original score. “Shōgun” took casting, cinematography, period costumes, editing, period/fantasy production design, period/fantasy hairstyling, main title design, non-prosthetic period/fantasy/sci-fi makeup, prosthetic makeup, sound editing, sound mixing, special visual effects, and stunt performance, and broke a record previously held by “Game of Thrones.”
Tonight, the FX drama is nominated for Best Drama series, among a slew of acting nominations where it looks to continue its stunning run.

TV’s biggest night is back for a second time this year, with the 76th Annual Emmy Awards back to their regularly-scheduled September ceremony. The impact of 2023’s Hollywood strikes is still rippling through the industry — including through the 75th Emmys, which took place earlier this year, in January — but the 2023-2024 Emmy nominees delivered another excellent year of television.
Despite the back-to-back ceremonies, the Emmys eligibility period holds strong; this ceremony will honor TV shows that premiered between June 2023 and May 2024. That includes pre-strike premieres like “The Bear” Season 2 and spring 2024 hits like “Hacks” Season 3. This was the first year without a lot of usual suspects in the Emmy race, such as “Succession,” “Ted Lasso,” “Barry,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” other favorites like “The Gilded Age,” “The Bear,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and “The Crown” are still in the running.
Along with extensive coverage on the nominees and odds for each category,...

Elizabeth Debicki’s first Emmy nomination for “The Crown” is associated with her nearly 16-minute turn in season five’s “Couple 31” installment, which was passed over in favor of a slightly longer performance delivered by Jennifer Coolidge on “The White Lotus.” As the clear frontrunner in the 2024 Best Drama Supporting Actress race, she has submitted a farewell season episode in which she appears for twice as long as before and thus outpaces the screen times of all but two of this year’s 25 other drama regular nominees.
The seven current drama supporting actress contenders submitted performances that last for an average of 17 minutes and 31 seconds, or 32.90% of their single episodes. This data was calculated using a simple definition of stand-alone screen time, which is any time a given performer can be seen on screen or heard off screen. Contiguous moments of silent and non-visible scene time were not counted.

Season 3 of “The Morning Show” marked a major sea change for the watercooler drama series — and it appears the Emmys have taken notice.
Following a high-profile showrunner swap in 2022, with Charlotte Stoudt taking the reins from cocreator Kerry Ehrin, who headed the first two seasons and took on a consultant role for its third, the Apple TV+ series came into its own as a rich, multifaceted issue drama that, while heavy on the soap, tackled of-the-moment politics impacting any viewer with a pulse and internet access. By and large leaving the #MeToo drama of Steve Carrell’s embattled morning news anchor Mitch Kessler in the rearview mirror of his fatal, Italian-countryside car crash, Season 3 amped up the interpersonal dramas of its deep-bench cast, led by EPs Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon; introduced a new Big Bad (and ill-advised love interest) in Jon Hamm’s media-minded tech billionaire Paul Marks; and even dramatized the Jan.

It’s happening. Or, better put, it’s about to happen. It’s not over just yet — not officially — but after FX successfully shifted “Shōgun” from the Limited Series categories to Drama, all indications point toward a big night for the international epic at this year’s (second) Primetime Emmy Awards. Maybe even a record-setting night. After all, before the move, the Drama contenders weren’t exactly peak TV. Maybe they were Peak TV contenders, in that they were the result of too much television overwhelming voters with big, expensive options and distracting them from lesser-known, higher-quality programming, but they weren’t peak TV in the sense that these shows ascended to the qualitative top of our nation’s mountain of television.
Got all that? Well then you likely remember that earlier in the awards cycle, we looked at whether “Shōgun” could break the Emmy record for most wins in...

Elizabeth Debicki, the Emmy-nominated actress who portrayed Princess Diana in Netflix‘s The Crown, said that the royal drama concluded with an appropriate number of six seasons.
“I think it ended in the right place, really,” Debicki, who has played Princess Di for the final two seasons, told People. “I think it respected its own cycle in a way.”
Since its premiere in 2016, The Crown has garnered 21 Emmy wins, including Best Drama across four seasons, with an additional seven nominations for Season 6 this year.
“It always kind of knew where it was going, and then I think there was a sense from the writing from [creator] Peter [Morgan] as well, that it understood its own end in a way. It’s very delicate, I think,” Debicki said.
The actress added, “He did an amazing job wrapping up such an enormous journey. I don’t really like the word journey, but it was...

This year’s Emmy nominees for Supporting Actress in a Drama Series are a mix of former winners and first-time nominees — and if you’re on The Morning Show or The Crown, there’s a pretty good chance you’re nominated.
Those two shows represent six of the seven nominees in this category, which is becoming a pattern lately: Last year, The White Lotus grabbed five of the eight slots, including one for winner Jennifer Coolidge. The Crown’s Elizabeth Debicki is the only repeat nominee from last year, back again for her work as Princess Diana in the sixth and final season.

The third season of “The Morning Show” was packed with more twists and turns than ever, but might the Apple TV+ series have one last surprise up its finely tailored sleeve: A win for Best Drama Series?
There’s a case to be made, particularly if the show’s strength among the actors’ branch of the television academy is as strong as the drama’s 10 acting nominations indicate. “The Morning Show” landed Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon simultaneous Best Drama Actress nominations for the first time, put former “The Morning Show” winner Billy Crudup and former nominee Mark Duplass back in contention alongside show newcomer (and former Emmy winner) Jon Hamm in the Best Drama Supporting Actor race, and stacked the Best Drama Supporting Actress category with four nominees: Nicole Beharie, Greta Lee, Karen Pittman and Holland Taylor. Many awards prognosticators expected the drama categories at this year’s Emmys to feature an odd assortment of nominated titles. Consider it a perfect storm of sorts: With the ending of HBO’s Succession (which took the top prize for three of its four seasons) and AMC’s Better Call Saul (which garnered a staggering 53 nominations across its six seasons without a single win) — plus the fact that last year’s strikes forced shows like last year’s drama nominees The Last of Us, Stranger Things, The White Lotus and Yellowjackets to delay production — this year’s contenders for best drama series include only one previous nominee in The Crown, which won the prize in 2021.

Nicole Beharie received her first Emmy nomination this year, for her performance in the third season of “The Morning Show,” and she was sick in bed when she found out about it. “I had a little bout of Covid, and I was in bed after doing, like, a 16-hour day, and someone called me and was like, ‘Oh my God, girl!’ And I was like, ‘What’s happening? What’s going on?’ And then my manager called and I was like, ‘This is not funny!’ I actually didn’t believe it. And I was also under the weather, so it was like, ‘This is kind of not a funny joke.’ And then I looked it up myself and… it feels good,” she tells Gold Derby during a recent webchat (watch the full exclusive video interview above). “It’s a surprise for me. You know, this whole job has been a massive gift.

Based on the merits of its first two seasons, Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show” was nominated for three of the four regular drama series acting Emmys, with its lone elusive category having been the supporting female one. Now, following its submission of seven featured ladies on the initial 2024 Emmy ballot, it has simultaneously scored a whopping four Best Drama Supporting Actress mentions, joining only three other series that have done the same or better.
The supporting actresses representing “The Morning Show” on this year’s final Emmy ballot are Nicole Beharie, Greta Lee, Karen Pittman, and Holland Taylor. Only Pittman has been part of the cast since the show’s inception, as Lee and Taylor first appeared in season two and Beharie was just added ahead of season three.
