A funny thing happened amid Hollywood’s obsession with new tech, higher resolution, and utilizing bells and whistles to grease the path to quality images. In addition to everything from 4k upgrades to IMAX reimaginings and Darren Aronofsky going full 18k, the upgrades were quietly adopted by other aspects of the entertainment industry to staggeringly gorgeous results. Sure, inventing new lenses made “Killers of the Flower Moon” a swoon-worthy cinematic spectacle in theaters. But did it make you care about a dung beetle?
That’s the charming and beautiful trick of Nat Geo’s new seven-part series “Incredible Animal Journeys,” premiering November 19. Narrated by Jeremy Renner, each episode follows a wide variety of wildlife on their regular migrations; the first episode alone includes a flaming flock of flamingoes, a herd of zebras facing multiple predators (including the results of climate change), and that dung beetle. Over a decade ago, four-time Emmy®-winning series Frozen Planet gave viewers unprecedented insight into life in the Poles. Now, the highly-anticipated sequel, Frozen Planet II, returns to the Arctic and Antarctic to observe the amazing species that thrive there. But, going further than the first season, it also explores life beyond the Poles – witnessing the wildlife dramas that play out in all the world’s coldest regions: our high mountains, frozen deserts, snowbound forests, and ice-cold oceans. These are the last true wildernesses on earth; places so challenging for survival that only a heroic cast of animals can live here. From polar bears to penguins, Siberian tigers to snow monkeys, each species must overcome unique challenges to survive their extreme environments. Narrated by Emmy®-winning famed naturalist Sir David Attenborough (Planet Earth II, Blue Planet II), Frozen Planet II premieres Saturday, January 28 at 8pm Et/7pm C on BBC America and AMC+.

Blue Planet III and Gladiators are coming to the BBC. The Junior Eurovision Song Contest will also air on the network for the first time.
The Sir David Attenborough-presented landmark was revealed at the Edinburgh TV Festival this afternoon by BBC commissioners, described as “using the very latest in underwater filming techniques to reveal brand new and untold stories from magical underwater worlds.”
The show from the prestigious BBC Studios Natural History Unit will take on the legacy of 2017’s Blue Planet II, which led to a sea change in plastics pollution and the perception of life in our oceans. Blue Planet II was one of the most-viewed BBC shows of the decade, coming a few years after the first Blue Planet.
The third series will focus on the five major underwater habitats: the Tropical Seas; Temperate Seas; Polar Seas; High Seas; and Deep Seas, while the sixth episode...

After its first ever virtual Showcase earlier this year, the 2022 BBC Studios Showcase will also be fully digital, the outfit revealed on Tuesday.
The producer-distributor will hold a three-day program of virtual events running from Feb. 28-March 2, rather than host global buyers in person at its usual Liverpool extravaganza. While the event is still at least six months out, sources tell Variety the company needed to let its suppliers know well in advance.
“We’re proud that BBC Studios Showcase has made the U.K. a key destination for the world’s content buyers but the pandemic has accelerated changes in the way we can help them discover our shows,” said Paul Dempsey, president of global distribution for BBC Studios.
“Their terrific response to our virtual Showcase earlier this year, coupled with continued uncertainty around international travel means that we will once again bring our content to customers digitally next February.

BBC America will become Wonderstruck on Saturdays later this year and will air nature and natural history shows during that time.
Set to launch in the fourth quarter of 2019, Wonderstruck will be the exclusive U.S. television home to the “Planet Earth” collection and other series from BBC Studios’ Natural History Unit. It will take over BBC America’s channel space on Saturdays beginning at 6 a.m. and running until 6 a.m. the next morning. This is similar to how Adult Swim takes over Cartoon Network at nights, but is considered a different network.
Wonderstruck will feature sneak peek at David Attenborough’s “Seven Worlds, One Planet,” which will debut in 2020. “Blue Planet Now,” a follow up to the award-winning “Blue Planet II,” will also anchor the new micro-net.

BBC America has ordered wildlife series Eden (w/t), its first original series from Blue Planet and Planet Earth producer BBC Studios’ Natural History Unit.
The commission comes as the U.S. cable network ramps up its natural history content with plans to offer a preview of its 2020 tentpole series Seven Worlds, One Planet during the launch of Wonderstruck this fall and Blue Planet Now anchoring its micro-net.
From exec producer Mark Brownlow, who has worked on Blue Planet II and Planet Earth, Eden looks at the 15% of the Earth’s land surface that remains as untouched wilderness. The show will travel to six different and spectacular areas around the world, exploring the wildlife, untamed beauty, and fragility of these last, untouched and irreplaceable places on Earth.

The morning after “Killing Eve” returned for its second season on BBC America, that network’s parent company held a series of panels at New York City’s Public Hotel celebrating the company’s successes — including announcing a third-season pickup — and indicating the path they intend to follow. AMC Networks, comprised of AMC, BBC America, IFC, and SundanceTV, among others, brought together talent from across its four flagship channels for a summit to address their place in an increasingly fragmented TV universe.
“We are competing not just with 500 new shows each year,” said the company’s president of entertainment Sarah Barnett in an address kicking off the summit, “but also every show that’s ever existed.” The company’s value proposition, she suggested, lay in its ability to do what “Killing Eve” has so far done — standing out by dint of its lack of artistic compromise. “Can there be a...

“Planet Earth II” allowed us to soar with eagles, scramble with iguanas, and dance with flamingos. But despite taking a perilous dip with penguins, the nature series kept to mainly dry realms. Instead, “Planet Earth: Blue Planet II,” the sequel to the 2001 series, is taking the plunge into the ocean’s depths to reveal the mysterious world that exists under the waves.
Filming in water poses its own challenges though, but fortunately, technology and mankind’s insatiable curiosity and determination have prompted innovations that have made it easier to film in the murky depths, under intense pressure, and in other inhospitable or tricky conditions. IndieWire spoke to executive producer James Honeyborne, as well as producers Mark Brownlow and Orla Doherty, to learn which devices and techniques were used to capture the series’ stunning aquatic footage of the phenomena and denizens of the sea.
