British filmmaker discusses her acclaimed vegan, feminist horror masterpiece The Herd. One of horror’s unique qualities is that it can, through its fantastical elements, offer filmmakers great freedom to discuss complicated issues in a way that does not have to be explicitly clear. This can be seen recently in Jennifer Kent’s The Babadook, where the…

Grimmfest 2014 takes place in Manchester, England, from the 2nd-5th October, and the opening night lineup has been announced. It includes two bloody fantastic features, an exclusive short film premiere, and some great special guests.
This year’s Grimmfest Opening Night will be headlined by the English Premiere of Brian O’Malley’s Scottish/Irish horror Let Us Prey starring Liam Cunningham ("Game of Thrones") and Pollyanna McIntosh (The Woman).
Synopsis:
We join Rachel (McIntosh), a rookie cop, as she is about to begin her first nightshift in a neglected police station in a Scottish backwater town... the kind of place where the tide has gone out and stranded a motley bunch of the aimless, the forgotten, the bitter-and-twisted who all think that, really, they deserve to be somewhere else. They all think they’re there by accident and that, with a little luck, life is going to get better.

Still don't have a calendar picked out for next year? That Calendar of Sexy Monsters we posted about last month wasn't up your alley? Well don't worry, because we've got you covered!
The brain-child of UK-based filmmaker Melanie Light, the Women in Horror Calendar is a year-long celebration of the artists, actresses and talented ladies that dominate the horror scene, each month shining the spotlight on the women who unfortunately only seem to get recognized one month out of every year - February being 'Women in Horror Month.' The Woman's Pollyanna McIntosh, Hellraiser's Barbie Wilde and taxidermy artist Tessa Farmer are just a few of the lovely ladies that fill out the calendar, the focus being placed on their talents rather than their bodies - refreshing, to say the least.
All proceeds from the sale of the calendars will be split between the charities Rape Crisis England and the Sophie Lancaster Foundation,...

UK-based production designer/art director Melanie Light has written and directed Escape, a short film whose Nevada shoot she describes as "grueling"; and since she figures it "may as well go somewhere," she's decided to put it up on the Internet, which of course means we have it for you right here!
Synopsis:
A short story of a man (Darri Ingolfsson) and a woman (Julia Sandberg Hansson) meeting in a bar. The woman, recently divorced, has her guard down; and the handsome lonely man makes his move. They hit if off, but the night doesn't end the way the woman intended, and she becomes his toy a bit more than she imagined. A real play on the dangers of a one-night stand.
Here's how Light describes the experience: Shot over basically 48 hours in the beautiful ghost town of Gold Point, Nevada, this is [my] third short film, which was solely produced,...

As part of our ongoing effort to find you guys all the latest and greatest genre projects from across the globe, today we have the early word on Tristan Versluis' short film "Pixel", a tale of one man's wild antics and over-sexed ego, which inevitably steer him into his own redemption.

Check out these first images from Switch, a new short horror film produced, written, edited and directed by British filmmaker Melanie Light, usually known for her production design on horror films like Scarcrow. Switch was produced by Charlotte Knight, with cinematography by Nicolas Britt, and stars Kitty Broadhurst and Robin King.
Light calls Switch "a battle of the sexes." Lots of societal references, and her feelings on large corporations dominate, along with a punk aesthetic in regards to costume.
"There's a strong element of girl power," she says...
"My male character is on his way home, but gets distracted by a female jogging out in the snowy roads. He decides to pursue her, leading to a nasty conclusion... One night I just thought, you know what, I'm sick of all the boys getting all the glory and fun killing people in their movies and I think its about time I had a go.

Not Alone, the debut feature from British FX artist-turned-director Tristan Versluis, is midway through its three-week shoot. Though set in 1957 on the East Coast of the United States, Versluis and his cast and crew are shooting in locations around England; he sent along a few exclusive early photos, which you can see below.
Lucy Benjamin, familiar to UK audiences from five years on the BBC soap Eastenders, stars as Eli, an emotionally damaged young woman who arrives at an abandoned family cabin with a head full of nightmares and a car trunk full of unburied secrets. Before long, her nightmares turn real and the things that stalk her mind become the walking, talking demons that are found inside everyone’s soul. Trapped by her own doing—or imprisoned by some unseen motion set in action by someone else—Eli soon starts to spiral into a reality she has lost control of many times before.
