“America’s Got Talent” is TV’s only competition show that embraces all forms of variety acts, whether you’re a singer, a comedian, a magician, an aerialist, or anything in between. Throughout its nearly two decades on NBC, seven solo singers have claimed victory, with the most recent one being Season 14’s Kodi Lee. (See the “AGT” winners list.) However, there are four specific categories that have yet to win the top prize of $1 million and a headline show in Las Vegas. Can any of these types of acts make “AGT” history during the Season 19 finale on Tuesday, September 24?
First up, here’s a refresher on this year’s Top 10 finalists: singer Richard Goodall, quick-change artist Solange Kardinaly, air-dance group Airfootworks, dance crew Brent Street, singer Dee Dee Simon, acrobatic group Hakuna Matata Acrobats, comedian Learnmore Jonasi, dog act Roni Sagi & Rhythm, aerial duo Sebastián & Sonia, and drone group Sky Elements.

The live shows of “America’s Got Talent” Season 18 begin on Tuesday, August 22 with the first “Qualifiers” round. In this stage of the competition, the acts sent through by the judges during the “Auditions” phase will perform again for a chance to advance to the finals. Of the 55 acts we know advanced to this round, 21 incorporate some form of singing in their overall talent. That’s over a third of the acts still in the competition, leaving us to wonder whether singing acts have a distinct advantage when it comes to the world’s biggest talent show. In terms of winners, it’s been four years since the last singer, Kodi Lee, claimed victory.
In the first six seasons of “AGT,” all of the victors worked within the singing genre on their way to claiming the championship. Bianca Ryan, Neal E. Boyd, Kevin Skinner, Michael Grimm and Landau Eugene Murphy, Jr....

During Tuesday’s final auditions episode of “America’s Got Talent,” no less than three animal acts gave it their all for the judges from the comfort of their own homes. Dog act Chris & Sid sang a country duet from their truck. Puppy Pals was a more traditional animal act that focused on an eight-year-old Florida girl with her trained pooches. And Erin McCarthy belted out opera while on horseback, which begs the question: will she bring her horse with her if she makes it to the live shows in Hollywood? So far only one animal act has ever claimed victory on NBC’s reality TV show: Olate Dogs in Season 7. Do any of the current Season 15 hopefuls have what it takes to join the “Agt” winners list?

Back in Season 12 of “America’s Got Talent,” ventriloquist Darci Lynne Farmer and singer Angelica Hale battled for viewers’ votes week after week. Eventually it came down to the two of them, with Darci Lynne being named the winner and Angelica coming in second place. Flash-forward two years to spinoff series “Agt: The Champions” and their fates have completely flipped. Darci Lynne (now 14) was eliminated in Week 2 while Angelica (now 11) advanced to the Finals in Week 3. Well, even though she’s off the show, that’s not stopping Darci Lynne from proving she’s a class act.

World-renowned illusionist Darcy Oake, who made a name for himself as the fifth-place act on “Britain’s Got Talent” Season 8, made his debut in front of American audiences during the third episode of “Agt: The Champions.” Darcy’s performance wowed the judges as he seemingly made Heidi Klum float in midair (watch above). Unfortunately, his stint on the spinoff reality TV show was short-lived as the Superfans, the voters who wield all the power this season, decided to send through opera singer Paul Potts instead. Did the Superfans get it wrong this week? Vote down in our poll below.

Stand-up comedian Tom Cotter has a friend in supermodel Heidi Klum. After curmudgeonly judge Simon Cowell pushed his red X midway through Tom’s act during the third episode of “America’s Got Talent: The Champions,” Heidi told Simon, “That was totally wrong!” Tom previously came in second place to Olate Dogs during Season 7 of “Agt” in 2012, which he mentioned during his new routine in the spinoff series. Unfortunately, Simon thought that his jokes about losing to dogs and about having twins were just “ordinary,” which is why he hit his buzzer. Watch Tom’s performance video above and read the judges’ comments below.

Get your first look at these international imports in the teaser video above.

Episode 1 of “America’s Got Talent: The Champions” included a return appearance by Bianca Hale, the singer who launched the franchise back in 2006 when she won season 1 of “Agt.” She did not make it through to the final.
