Given how easy it is to dramatize ghost encounters, the paranormal subgenre has become horror’s deepest mixed-bag of results. A good zombie movie requires flesh-rotting makeup, and slasher flicks demand artistically grotesque gore, but any average Joe or Jane can string together a few spiritual scares.
Slam some doors, shut some windows, make objects fly around a room – you know, that Paranormal Activity knock-off garbage – and finito! Just look at Jason Stutter’s The Dead Room. Costs are low because one rickety shack acts as the film’s single setting, and only three actors have to pretend something nasty is chasing them. Paranormal Activity made a cool profit doing the same, so why not The Dead Room?
Well, because it’s weightless, derivative, recycled genre boredom that makes even 75 minutes feel like a horror fan’s personal Hell.

Jason Stutter's stylish new haunted house film, The Dead Room, is set to have its world premiere at Sitges this Wednesday and the first trailer has landed.
An interesting technical note which Twitch points out, is the film's sound design makes use of ultra-low frequency rumble technology which supposedly elicits a unique response in viewers. Makes me want to see this one in theatres.

The New Zealand Film Commission has named the recipients of its one-off business development scheme Boost, with total funding of more than $NZ450,000.

Teaser trailers rarely spook this horror fan. However, Jason Stutter's trailer for The Dead Room comes on stronger than a dark coffee. Twitch Film has previewed the film and the clip, in which a spirit is protective of its lair. Inspired by a New Zealand urban legend, this title has been picked up by Xyz Films for distribution in North America. As well, the film will debut in New Zealand this Halloween. Fans of horror can take an early look at The Dead Room here. But, you will want to make sure your cereal bowl is empty, before proceeding. The urban legend focuses on a farmhouse, in Central Otago, New Zealand. In the 1970s, two scientists and a psychic investigated a home, which was supposedly haunted. Secrets reside in this haunted location and so does a vengeful spirit. This research experiment will be their last! Jason Stutter is also...

It's seven years ago now that I first came across the work of New Zealand director Jason Stutter. The occasion was Careful With That Axe! - the first in what would become a trilogy of hilarious 'cautionary' short films that would eventually include Careful With That Power Tool and Careful With That Crossbow. I became a raving fan, with those shorts demonstrating that not only was Stutter one hell of entertaining director but that he had an uncommon grasp of the power that comes from simply establishing a clear premise and then delivering what that premise promises to the utmost degree. All of which bodes rather well for The Dead Room. When a terrified family flees a desolate southern New Zealand farmhouse, two cynical scientists and a...

Newsflash: I will watch anything featuring “Flight of the Conchords” alumni Jemaine Clement. I own “Tonga Ninja”, “Gentlemen Broncos”, and “Diagnosis: Death” simply because he’s in there doing his thing, and I’m not too proud to admit it. To my giddy delight, the fine, dedicated individuals at Twitch were extremely kind enough to give the world the first look at the man’s latest project, namely director Jason Stutter’s pitch black comedy “Predicament”. The film, a demented tale surrounding the bumbling misadventures of three would-be blackmailers, is tearing things up on the festival circuit, though I’m honestly not surprised. It does, after all, star Jemaine Clement. I mean, come on, people. North American release dates have not been set as of this writing, though you can watch this clip over and over again until your little heart’s content.

Jemaine Clement Is In A Predicament! An Exclusive Early Look At Jason Stutter's Gothic Crime Comedy!
Following a pair of sold out and raucously received festival screenings in Wellington, Jason Stutter's New Zealand gothic crime comedy Predicament is all set to launch its official site tomorrow offering most the first look at the film's full theatrical trailer. But you, the faithful Twitch reader, are not among that 'most'. For here, right now, we have an exclusive early look.
Flight of the Conchords star Jemaine Clement plays a major role in this one, along with Heath Franklin and Hayden Frost as a trio of would-be blackmail artists who have things go badly wrong.
The production design on this looks bang on, almost as bang on as the sense of deliciously macabre comic timing. Clement - always fantastic - looks to keep his fans coming back for more as the pasty faced con man, while the young stars are engaging and, yes, that Is musician Tim Finn...

Those intrigued by the brief teaser for Kiwi director Jason Stutter's Predicament - check it out below if you haven't already - have got good things in store. Very good things indeed.
Those heading by the New Zealand Film office can take an early look at the full trailer for Stutter's debut feature and it is fantastically bleak, absurdly comic stuff. Everything hinted at in the teaser pays off much, much larger. Flight of the Conchords star Jemaine Clement is at his pasty faced, hilarious best as a photographer enlisted in a blackmail scam by two younger cohorts and the chemistry amongst the entire group looks absolutely spot on, as does the slightly off-kilter, heavily noir-tinged art direction. Hopefully this arrives in a public forum soon because it is just excellent.

Though it isn't drawing nearly as much attention or producing nearly as many films as is neighboring Australia, there is a growing wave of genre tinted film coming from New Zealand. Peter Jackson is the big name there, of course, followed by Black Sheep director Jonathan King, and now get ready to start hearing about Jason Stutter.
Already well known on the short film circuit thanks to his hysterical Careful With trilogy - Careful With That Axe and Careful With That Power Tool are being joined by Careful With That Crossbow this summer - Stutter will soon be hitting screens with his dark comedy feature Predicament as well.
Naive teenager, Cedric Williamson, conspires with two misfits to photograph and blackmail adulterous couples, When the scam goes wrong they end up with blood on their hands. Tortured by lust, roped into blackmail and possible an accessory to murder, Cedric is in a predicament.

There are few people out there who are as naturally funny as Rhys Darby, who you may know from Flight of the Conchords or Pirate Radio. He's the sort of guy who could even make the process of telling someone that they're going to die kind of funny. Which is exactly what happens in his latest role as a doctor in the comedy Diagnosis: Death. In the direct-to-dvd flick, Darby joins fellow Conchords Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement for a few hilarious bit roles in a movie about a supernatural force that invades a hospital for the terminally ill. Have a look at the clip and the film's official synopsis below. A supernatural force brings together two lost souls undergoing radical treatment at an experimental drug-testing facility. Although it wasn’t nearly as funny as I was hoping it would be, “Tongan Ninja” director Jason Stutter’s amusing horror/comedy “Diagnosis: Death” is finally making its way to the States later this year. The film will certainly be a treat for hardcore fans of HBO’s popular series “Flight of the Conchords,” which stars Jemaine Clement, Bret McKenzie, and Rhys Darby. And while the marketing team behind the film would love for you to believe that these talented individuals have significant roles in the feature, this is actually a tad misleading. Their respective parts are, unfortunately, mere cameos, so do keep that in mind before blindly ordering the film in hopes of satisfying your “Conchords” fix. Here’s the synopsis, as usual: A supernatural force brings together two lost souls undergoing radical treatment at an experimental drug-testing facility. When the facility is locked down for the weekend and the drugs take effect,...

Variety reports that the Clive Barker film Book Of Blood is one of a pair of genre features that Lightning Media has picked up for U.S. theatrical release. Director John Harrison had previously speculated (see item here) that Book would bypass big screens on the way to a debut on the Sci Fi Channel, but happily, that seems not to be the case now.
Like the other Lightning acquisitions, Book will hit Stateside venues late this year or in early 2010. The other flick of Fangorian appeal that the company grabbed is Diagnosis Death, a horror spoof that seems worth looking forward to since it features the cast of the hilarious HBO series Flight Of The Conchords: Brett McKenzie, Rhys Darby and Jemaine Clement. Jason Stutter (who's done documentary work for Peter Jackson) directed the film from a script he wrote with co-star Raybon Kan, about two people who...

One film we've been keeping tabs on with regard to distribution -- Will it go theatrical? Will it be TV & DVD only? -- is Clive Barker's Book of Blood. Today we learned that Lightning Media has acquired Us rights to the film and plans to release it theatrically in late 2009/early 2010.
Screen Daily reports that Book of Blood is just one of four films scooped up by Lightning. Two are non-genre, but the other is a "horror spoof" (lord, spare us!) entitled Diagnosis Death, about which we could find very little info other than that it was produced by Jason Stutter and involves two people undergoing a radical treatment for cancer that causes hallucinations. Hilarious, right?
The films are nothing if not diverse, as evidenced by Paul Gardner, the co-president of Lightning Media's, statement that "we are striving to hit broad audiences. With these titles we think we have accomplished that.

Lightning Media is reinforcing its upcoming distribution slate with a horror-comedy called Diagnosis: Death . The tone of director Jason Stutter's film is said to be in line with Peter Jackson's early works. The story, co-penned by Stutter and Raybon Kan, concerns two people undergoing a radical treatment for cancer. Locked in a medical facility over a weekend as guinea pigs for a drug trial, they discover the clinic may pose more harm than they could have imagined. The drugs cause hallucinations. Or are they seeing ghosts for real? Struggling with their senses, they must team up to solve a haunting secret. The Flight of the Conchords Bret McKenzie, Rhys Darby and Jemaine Clement star with Raybon Kan, Jessica Grace Smith and Suze Tye.
