Fuad Kavur, born in Istanbul, came to London in 1963, when his paternal uncle was Turkish ambassador to the Court of St James' s. He went to Lycée Charles de Gaulle, and later studied International Relations at UCL. However, following the success of an opera he directed, "The Trial", by Gaottfired von Einem, he worked as assistant director at Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. This led to collaborating with Peter Ustinov at Edinburgh, Paris, Hamburg, La Scalia Milan and. Berlin Opera Houses. Then, he staged Wagner's complete "Ring Cylcle" based on George London's production, at Seattle Opers, WA.
Kavur's then produced a feature film "Memed My Hawk", based on the Nobel Prize Nominee Turkish writer Yashar Kemal's novel, starring Peter Ustinov and Herbert Lom. In 1963, the film was originally to be produced by Daryl Zanuck for 20th Century Fox, but the Turkish government of the day banned it, arguing it was communist propaganda. So, due to Ustinov's renewed interest, in 1982, Kavur bought the rights back from Alan Ladd, Jr, then Head of Business Affiars at Fox, and "Memed" was finally made, in collaboration with Jadran Film, in Yugoslavia. Although, in 1984, "Memed" had a Royal Premiere in London, in the aid of Unicef, the exhibition of it is still strictly banned n Turkey, to this day- 2019.
At present, Kavur is preparing a movie, "Ataturk", about the founder of the secular republic of Turkey, to be shot in Hungary, in collaboration with Origo Film Studios.
