Phoenix hooks 'Ladder 49' for Disney, Russell
The Walt Disney Co. seems to have found its firefighter as the studio is in negotiations with Joaquin Phoenix to star in Ladder 49 for director Jay Russell. The project, which is being produced by Casey Silver Prods., is about a firefighter who awaits rescue in a burning building, during which time he reflects on his career and family. Ladder was penned by Lewis Colick and is being overseen at the studio by Disney production exec Brad Epstein. There is no production start date yet. The project reunites Phoenix with Disney, for whom he appeared in this summer's blockbuster Signs. Phoenix can be seen opposite Kim Basinger in the upcoming drama Aurora Island, which is scheduled for a 2003 release. He is repped by Endeavor and the Iris Burton Agency.
