"Do you really think that five children would stand against the end of the world?" FilmInk in Australia has debuted an official trailer for an Australian fantasy adventure family film titled The Legend of the Five, marking the feature directorial debut of actress Joanne Samuel (she played Jessie in the original Mad Max movie!). This looks very much like a fun-for-all-ages kind of fantasy story, campiness and all. When a group of misfit teenagers encounter an ancient relic during a school trip to a museum, they find themselves caught up in a magical world, with elemental powers beyond their belief, and the responsibility of stopping an age old evil from destroying the world. The movie stars Lauren Esposito, Gabi Sproule, Leigh Joel Scott, Nicholas Andrianakos, Deborah An, Beth Champion, and Tiriel Mora. This seems like it's straight out of the 90s, but that may be a good thing considering the...

Damion Hunter in ‘Last Ark.’
For every actor who works consistently and achieves varying degrees of success in the screen industry, there are many more, like Damion Hunter.
Since graduating from Waapa in 1995 and Nida in 1998, the Indigenous actor has appeared in episodes of numerous series including Harrow, Redfern Now, Supernova, Farscape and All Saints as well as the miniseries Devil’s Dust and movies Wyrmwood and Around the Block.
Not enough, however, to sustain a viable career, so he retrained as a high school teacher in 2012 after working as a teacher’s aide in 2009.
He now teaches English and history at a college near his home in the Northern Rivers of Nsw and he has a sideline as a hip hop artist, but he has not abandoned acting.
His latest role is in Michael Joy’s movie Smoke Between Trees, which stars Tiriel Mora as Mathew Higgins, a middle-class...

Elly Chatfield in ‘Smoke Between Trees’
Filmmaker Michael Joy knew he had to tread carefully when he embarked on Smoke Between Trees, a drama involving an Indigenous woman, her grandson and the boy’s grandfather.
As a non-Indigenous man he wanted to ensure the film would ring true for Indigenous people as well as relating to audiences generally.
So he consulted closely with Indigenous actors Elly Chatfield in her first lead role, Damion Hunter and numerous Indigenous Elders.
The producer/director/Dop/co-writer showed the film to a group of Elders with some trepidation and was both relieved and delighted when they gave thumbs up.
Tiriel Mora plays Mathew Higgins, a middle-class whitefella who is consumed with grief and anger. When his estranged 10-year-old grandson Ari (newcomer Robert-Joseph Slockee) re-enters his life, he has the chance for reconciliation.
Artist Elly Chatfield, a Gamillaroi woman from North-West Nsw, is Francine, the boy’s maternal grandmother.

‘Backtrack Boys.’
Russell Crowe last week urged his 2.73 million Twitter followers to see Backtrack Boys in cinemas, lauding Catherine Scott’s feature documentary as really special and a great story.
A reasonable number of Crowe’s followers did so as Umbrella Entertainment launched the film as an alternate content release, which means exhibitors have the flexibility to run limited sessions.
Meanwhile writer-director Heath Davis’ drama Book Week began its staggered roll-out on eight screens via Bonsai Films.
Backtrack Boys examines a youth program run by rule-breaking jackaroo Bernie Shakeshaft (hailed by Crowe as a “good fella and a bit of a genius”) on the outskirts of Armidale Nsw. Voted as the top feature documentary at the Melbourne International Film Festival, the film collected $24,000 from one session on Saturday and Sunday on 44 screens, and $56,000 including festival screenings.
This opens theatrically in Australia on Thursday.
It’s really special.

Its always an absolute pleasure to wake up to a cheeky email from our good friends in La-la-Land about a new movie they would like us to check out. Today was no different when we received a trailer for My Pet Dinosaur. Accompanying the trailer were phrases like “Spielbergian” or “E.T meets Pixar” says the Hollywood Reporter, and well I am totally going to check that trailer out. And you can too below:
When a boy finds the remnants of a failed military experiment his troubled town is plunged further into chaos as he accidentally makes a new friend.
I think My Pet Dinosaur looks great and definitely has a ton of potential to be a great 2017 family film not to be missed. There is a hugely endearing quality to the trailer that does instantly draw comparisons to movies like E.T, 2016s Pete’s Dragon or dare I...

Making friends is easy, keeping them is impossible... What in the heck is this? A trailer has debuted for an Australian kids adventure movie titled My Pet Dinosaur, which is literally being pitched as "E.T. meets Pixar". The story is about a boy who befriends a dinosaur, that is actually a creation of a military experiment gone wrong. But as they grow closer, he does his best to keep him safe and prevent it from being captured. Seems more like The Iron Giant than Pixar. Starring Jordan Dulieu, Annabel Wolfe, Christopher Gabardi, Tiriel Mora, Harrison Saunders, David Roberts, and Joanne Samuel. This is made by a VFX supervisor, so he knows how to make it all seem realistic, but that doesn't make up for the cheesiness. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Matt Drummond's My Pet Dinosaur, originally from THR: Short description: A troubled town is plunged...

Tiriel Mora has been given a year-long good behaviour bond. Once I had slipped on to the floor, he stopped." Tiriel said that the fight was triggered by him commenting on his (more)...

Film review: 'The Castle'
To Darryl Kerrigan, a man's home truly is his castle, even if said domicile happens to be a little close to the airport - OK, right beside the airport - was built on toxic landfill and has inspirational views of power lines.
A sweet Australian comedy cut from the same gently farcical cloth as "Crocodile Dundee" and "Muriel's Wedding", "The Castle" is a keeper.
While additional comparisons to "The Full Monty" are inevitable, the underdog story - which set boxoffice records Down Under - doesn't quite have that English sensation's crowd-rousing sweep but should nevertheless charm select-site North American audiences.
Created by the team responsible for "Frontline", a hit Aussie satirical political affairs show, "The Castle" concerns itself with the efforts of noble tow-truck driver Kerrigan (Michael Caton) to stand his ground when he receives notice that his beloved family dwelling in Cooloroo is being "compulsorily acquired" to make room for airport expansion.
With the loving support of his wife, Sal (Anne Tenney), and his grown-up children Dale (Stephen Curry), Steve (Anthony Simcoe), married Tracey (Sophie Lee) and incarcerated Wayne (Wayne Hope), Darryl fights the good fight all the way to the Supreme Court. He gets a little extra help from a retired Queen's Counsel and constitutional specialist (Charles Bud Tingwell) who is taken with his cause and offers his services free of charge.
Written in two weeks and shot in 11 days, "The Castle" certainly doesn't feel like a rush job. Making his feature debut, director Rob Sitch allows the quirky, character-specific humor to languidly cascade over the proceedings like one of Cooloroo's diesel-tinged breezes.
The screenplay, penned by Sitch along with Santo Cilauro, Tom Gleisner and Jane Kennedy, nimbly flirts with parody while never taking broad shots at the eminently lovable Kerrigan family.
Credit the adept cast with bringing the richly written characters to warmly vivid life. As the principled family patriarch, Caton combines a winning comic innocence and everyman determination that sets the tone for the other performances, which also include humorous contributions from Tiriel Mora as Kerrigan's sad-sack discount lawyer and Costas Kilias as his gung-ho Lebanese neighbor.
