Perhaps some of the animals of the Kruger National Park of South Africa know that the best defence is a good offence. Its reported that a poacher, toting an assault rifle and an axe was killed, by an elephant and a leopard!. This South African site has the details.

Elephants to the rescue

In South Africa, some antelope had been rounded up by a "private game capture company" to be relocated for a breeding program, presumably to become hunting stock. However, the gamekeepers plans were foiled when wild elephants came to the rescue. Yahoo News has some more details here.

Cheetahs on a military payroll?

A military airbase near Kruger National Park in South Africa was plagued by local wildlife crossing their runways. Their inventive solution was, instead of building huge fences or deploying poisons, to hire two Cheetahs to patrol the base and scare off the larger animals. They've also got some Caracals to help drive off birds and smaller critters.

The Holy Cow Health Plan

In Cambodia, folks are flocking to visit a brown cow thought to have miraculous healing powers. Flowers, incense and water are given to her as offerings and she then obliges by licking those who want her help. Her slobbery treatment is claimed to have restored mobility and cured a variety of sicknesses. Yahoo News have a few more details.

Giant Otter Mascot for SW England?

A site reporting for the county of Devon (not far from where I live) in the SW of England report that plans are underway to erect a giant otter statue alongside one of the main highways into the region. Mice in Space

Space travelling mice, 'mice-stronauts' could pave the way for humans to travel to Mars in spaceflights like this one in an article on CNN. A family of mice would live and breed over several months in a space vessel with an environment that simulates what life might be like on the surface of Mars.
