    Immaculate

    ★★½

Is that it? I was expecting a lot more given all the hype. Immaculate isn't a bad movie, and I appreciated its 1970s influences with Euro-horror - especially Suspiria. But it just sort of... ambles along with the odd jump-scare and grisly make-up effect to keep you awake. And the unforgettable final scene everyone was raving about left me cold. I should have lowered my expectations, clearly.

Godzilla × Kong: The New Empire

    ★★½

Does exactly what people want from this MonsterVerse series, with even less human goings-on than ever and more monster mayhem.

But it’s all incredibly stupid and there’s no emotional engagement with anything. I also couldn’t stop thinking about the millions of people being killed every time a bridge or skyscraper was destroyed during a fight. The human cost of life is never mentioned.

It was also upsetting to see the Pyramids demolished by Godzilla and Kong.

Not as good as Godzilla vs Kong, but also not as terrible as trailers led me to believe it might be.

Sorry, but this doesn't deserve the acclaim festooned upon it. 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, I see. Amazing.

Toni Erdmann is a German drama miss-sold as a comedy (the lead actress even agrees), about an eccentric father with a love of disguises, who pays his estranged career-minded daughter a surprise visit and proceeds to cause her great embarrassment.

Good idea. Funny idea. They're going to remake this with Kristen Wiig and Jack Nicholson. So someone clearly thinks it's a comedy in…

    Bohemian Rhapsody

    ★½

I was expecting to have lots of bones to pick with Bohemian Rhapsody, but to ultimately enjoy its spirit, the performance of Rami Malek (who got a 'Best Actor' Oscar for playing Freddie Mercury), and Queen's music...

I certainly wasn't expecting to find this as simplistic, hurried, and undramatic as it was, and heaven knows what the Academy was thinking when they voted for Malek---who's a great actor, but is only really doing a half-decent impersonation with some wigs and…
