Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by IrishJew (talk | contribs) at 09:30, 10 July 2014 (→‎Errors in In the news: Clarifying headline with sources). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 21:42 on 29 September 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

Israel–Gaza

The Israeli operation has nothing to do with the kidnapping and murder, it was initiated due to the Hamas rocket attacks for days. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.114.91.245 (talk) 15:09, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Previous poster is correct. The two events may be loosely related in that the kidnapping prompted the murder of Abu Khudair which may or may not have triggered unrest in Gaza, but the real proximate cause is increased rocket activity from Gaza. The NYT Headline (as of noon EST July 9) is "Hamas Extends Rockets' Range; Dozens of Gaza Strikes by Israel." Probably better would be something like "Israel launches an offensive in Gaza following a wave of rocket attacks from Hamas" or something. Avraham (talk) 15:54, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. This is at best POV and at worst just incorrect. The statement should be changed. Unfortunately, the article the item is based on, includes the same error in its lead. --Dweller (talk) 15:58, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with you that the main page isn't perfect, but this goes farther than main page. Main page discusses the context, July 4 ceasefire, and Hamas's breach of ceasefire. I think my proposed change above would still comport with the consensus as reflected on the main page that the immediate cause was that Hamas broke ceasefire and launched rockets. Avraham (talk) 16:23, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Regardless, the murder was four weeks earlier, not one week. -- Ypnypn (talk) 16:54, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The ITN entry makes it sound like Israel is taking revenge on Hamas for the kidnappings; actually, it is responding to the escalation in rocket attacks on Israel by Hamas. The article itself is erroneous. Yoninah (talk) 17:01, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The headline as it stands is incorrect on several counts: Firstly, the murders of the Israeli teens took place over three weeks ago. They were not the immediate cause of the Israeli operation either. The firing of hundreds of rockets from Gaza at Israeli cities since the weekend is the stated and immediate reason for the Israeli operation. The murders of the teens and the subsequent revenge murder of a Palestinian teen contributed to the high tended tensions but are not the proximate cause. Therefore the headline must be changed to be accurate, along the line of the suggestion above by Avraham. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.107.8.164 (talk) 17:51, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Its not really up to us to decide if the events are connected, but rather reflect what reliable sources say, and realibel sources generally make the connection. I have reworded, however, to make it clear it is not a direct result and also to fix the "1 week" error (I suppose it should have read "nearly 1 month"). We now have:
Israel launches an offensive on Gaza amidst rising tensions following the killing of Israeli teenagers in early June.
If concerns remain, feel free to reply further. --ThaddeusB (talk) 19:19, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I think that's a big improvement. Thanks. --Dweller (talk) 20:43, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
This still doesn't look right. The immediate background is the intensive rocket fire from Gaza into Israel. It creates a false impression, at best, to link the start of the Israeli operation to the murder of the teens rather than the rocket fire. At worst it could be construed as purposefully ignoring or obscuring the facts. I would like to see this headline changed to something along the lines of: Israel launches an offensive following an intensive barrage of rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip. --Chefallen (talk) 22:28, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps "Israel launches an offensive following a series of rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip"? The Rambling Man (talk) 22:37, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well if mentioning the kidnapping is "obscuring the facts" than not mentioning it in favor of the rockets is also obscuring the facts. Fact is the escalation of tensions started with the kidnapping. I think the current blurb accurately reflects the situation as well as possible in <15 words. ---ThaddeusB (talk) 01:05, 10 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I support ThaddeusB's proposal, but the killing did not take place in "early" June. How about:
Israel launches an offensive on Gaza amidst rising tensions following the kidnapping and murder of Israeli teenagers in June. --Fitzcarmalan (talk) 23:16, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dropping "early" --ThaddeusB (talk) 01:05, 10 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Theaddeus, I agree that reliable sources do make the connection as does the main article here, but the kidnappings and subsequent activity are more complicated background than what usually goes in the headline. And if you look at the major sources, they don't mention the kidnapping in their HEADLINES either. For example

WSJ Gaza Rockets Reaching Deeper Into Israel. Airstrikes on Palestinian Territory Aim to Degrade Hamas's Arsenal
| Washington Post Israeli drones hunt Hamas as militants fire rockets deeper into Israel
And [www.nytimes.com NY Times] as I mentioned above Hamas Extends Rockets' Range; Dozens of Gaza Strikes by Israel.
WNCT 'Rockets hit Israel iheartland as offensive begins',

In the major reliable news outlets, the news seems to be that Hamas if firing rockets and Israel is launching offenses back. IMO The body of the article is the place to go into detail about why Hamas is launching rockets, etc. No? If you disagree can you please clarify why and give sources? Thanks! Ongoing

In the ongoing part of the "In The News" section, it doesn't say FIFA World Cup anymore and the event is still going, there are still things happening after Brazil's defeat; and in Saturday and Sunday are the last matches. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Karlitatv (talkcontribs) 02:48, 10 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
