Bojan Kraut (April 12, 1908August 22, 1991) was a Slovenian and Yugoslav mechanical engineer who wrote famous "Strojniški Priročnik" (English: "Mechanical Engineering Handbook").

Biography

He was born in Kamnik where he finished elementary school. He finished Gymnasium in Ljubljana in 1926. In 1932 he became mechanical engineer after graduating from the Zagreb University. He firstly worked in Tivat and later he became a constructor in Ljubljana's Foundry. In 1937 he became teaching assistant at Ljubljana University where he recieved title of "honorary engineer". His last job before WW2 was in Slavonski Brod, where he worked as leading constructor of locomotives and railcars. After WW2 he gave huge contribution to restoration of Yugoslav industry. He worked as leading engineer in automobile factory "Tvornica Automobila Maribor" and later he became Technical director of "Litostroj". Finally he became professor at the Ljubljana University and was elected for the Faculty Dean and University Rector later.

In April of 1954 he published "Strojniški Priročnik", a handbook for the mechanical engineers. Handbook became very popular among engineers from all parts of Yugoslavia and after Kraut's death in 1991 it was renamed to "Krautov Strojniški Priročnik" ("Kraut's Mechanical Engineering Handbook"). The Handbook is the best selling Slovenian scientific book ever.
