If you like freaky body horror and not-so-subtle feminist rage, then you don’t want to miss out on The Substance, the new Demi Moore movie opening in theaters this weekend. Just don’t go in with a weak stomach.

Written and directed by French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat, this horror film first premiered at Cannes Film Festival to rave reviews, where it also won the Palme d’Or for Best Screenplay. Demi Moore stars as a fictional, aging Hollywood star named Elisabeth Sparkle, who uses an experimental black market drug to create a younger, hotter clone of herself, played by Margaret Qualley. Also starring Dennis Quaid as a sexist, unhinged Hollywood producer, The Substance is a loud, gross, and outrageous commentary on ageism and misogyny.

Horror fans don’t want to miss out on what some are calling the craziest film of the year, so here’s everything you need to know about where to watch The Substance, and when we expect to see The Substance streaming online.

Where to watch The Substance movie:

For now, The Substance will only available to watch in a movie theater, when it opens in the U.S. and the U.K. on Friday, September 20, and in France on November 6. You can find a showing near you via Fandango. The Substance is not yet available to watch online or on streaming.

Is The Substance movie streaming on Netflix or HBO Max?

The Substance is not streaming on Netflix or Max, and likely will not be on Netflix or Max any time soon, due to the fact that the film is a Mubi release, and will likely stream on the Mubi streaming platform, instead. (It was initially supposed to be a Universal release, but the studio was reportedly worried about the film’s content, and backed out.) If you want to watch The Substance movie at home, you’ll have to wait for the film to be available to buy or rent on digital platforms, or wait for it to stream on Mubi, a subscription streaming platform known for hosting art house films.

Is The Substance streaming on Mubi?

The Substance is not yet streaming on Mubi. Right now, the movie is only in theaters. That said, we do expect to see The Substance streaming on Mubi eventually, but we’re not sure when. Another recent Mubi film, Crossing, opened in theaters in the U.S. on July 19, and began streaming on Mubi a little over a month later, on August 30.

If The Substance follows a similar release pattern, you might see the film streaming on Mubi around the end of October 2024, in a little over a month. That said, perhaps the movie will come to streaming sooner, to capitalize on spooky season.

But this is all speculation. If you want to watch The Substance movie right away, you can catch the movie in theaters starting tomorrow.
