Max‘s original unscripted series Coming From America has a new episode airing this week, and DECIDER got an exclusive first look at the drama that unfolds.

The new, six-episode series follows four African American families who pack up all of their belongings to move to Africa, the “new land of opportunity.”

“Enticed by their ancestral roots, these families travel 5000 miles to find love, jobs, and a better life,” the logline reads. “First, they’ll have to survive the inevitable culture shock – but if they can endure the first 60 days, their lives could be changed forever.”

In a new clip from Episode 3 exclusively shared with DECIDER, the Kelly family is struggling to adapt to the heat in Africa after making the big move from the Bronx.

Gerald Kelly, a stand-up comedian whose sons also work in comedy, explains he had no idea that January through April is the “summer season” in Africa.

“They said 34 degrees celsius. I don’t know celsius and Fahrenheit, when the teacher was doing that in school I didn’t pay attention to any of that!” he says. “So, I saw 34 degrees I’m like, ‘It’s cold in Africa?’ Hell no. It’s 94 degrees out here!”

In a vlog, his wife LaMara Hunter-Kelly points to the beads of sweat pooling on her forehead. “We’re not gonna be doing this every day,” she says.

According to Gerald, the family moved to Accra, Ghana, from New York in hopes of launching a comedy club.

“We haven’t broke through that next level of comedy here in America yet. But I have friends in Ghana who are telling me the comedy scene is ready to take off to the next level,” Gerald says in Episode 1, titled “Africa Here We Come.”

“We’re ready to ride that train with them, baby, all the way to Ghana,” he continues. “This move to Ghana is gonna be the next chapter to expand what we started in America.”

But it looks like they weren’t totally prepared for the heat or the culture shock of moving to another country.

“As you can tell, all my clothes are long-sleeve,” Gerald explains in the clip. “I got a fur coat in my luggage that refused to come out the suitcase because it’s 96 degrees here!”

The Max reality show is produced by Eric Evangelista, Shannon Evangelista, Naimah Holmes, and Forrest Galante for Hot Snakes Media. Discovery’s Keith Hoffman and Carter Figueroa also executive produce.
