‘Trap’ Comes to Digital, But When Will the New M. Night Shyamalan Movie Be Streaming on Max?

You know Trap? That freakin’ nutjob movie that has everyone on the internet doing memes in this format? Well, the entertainment journalists heard that Trap is going to be released on digital platforms tomorrow. So they wrote up articles to announce the news. This whole article? It’s an announcement that the Trap digital release is tomorrow.

The new M. Night Shyamalan movie, Trap, is coming to “premium” video-on-demand just four weeks after the movie opened in theaters. Written and directed by Shyamalan, the films stars Josh Hartnett as Cooper: a lovable dad by day, and a sociopathic serial killer by night. Cooper takes his daughter Riley (Ariel Donoghue) to a concert for her favorite fictional singer, Lady Raven (Saleka Night Shyamalan). When he realizes the concert is a trap set by the FBI to capture him, he has only the duration of the concert to find an escape.

Trap divided critics, and earned $71 million at the worldwide box office, more than doubling its reported $30 million production budget. Not bad! But even far bigger box office hits are getting released on “premium” video-on-demand—which is the industry term for charging movie theater prices for an earlier release on digital platforms—after a month in theaters or less. Trap (2024) soon be available to watch at home, but you’ll have to pay a pretty penny to watch it—more, even, than you might pay to watch the movie in theaters. Why pay so much, when Trap will be streaming free on Max soon enough?

Here’s what you should know about how to watch Trap online, and when to expect to see Trap streaming on Max.

Trap digital release date:

Trap will be released on digital platforms tomorrow, on Friday, August 30. Beginning tomorrow, you’ll be able to buy and rent digitally on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Vudu, and more. The price may vary depending on which platform you use to purchase the film, but on Amazon Prime the movie will cost $24.99 to buy, and $19.99 to rent.

Trap will also be released on 4k UHD, DVD, and Blu-Ray on November 5. The digital release, the DVD, the Blu-Ray, and the 4k will come with the following special features: “Setting the Trap: A New M. Night Shayamalan Experience;” “Saleka as Lady Raven;” “Deleted Scenes: Cooper Gets Stopped by SWAT, Riley Shows Lady Raven Her Room, Cooper Takes a Hostage and Slips Away;” and “Extended Concert Scene: Where Did She Go.”

How to rent the Trap movie online:

Trap will be available to rent on digital platforms like Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Vudu, and more, beginning on August 30. The movie will cost $19.99 to rent, and you’ll have 48 hours to watch the movie after hitting “play.”

When will Trap be streaming on Max?

The Trap streaming release date on Max has not yet been announced, but we know that Trap will be on Max eventually because it is a Warner Bros. movie, and Max is the streaming service owned by Warner Bros. All the new WB theatrical movies end up streaming on Max, though the wait period has varied by title. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, for example, was released on PVOD four weeks after opening in theaters, and began streaming on Max on August 16, about seven weeks after it was released on PVOD. (And three days after it was released on DVD.)

If Trap—which is coming to digital four weeks after opening in theaters—follows a similar release pattern, you can expect to see Trap on Max around late October 2024, about seven weeks after its digital release date. But it’s also possible you may have to wait until after the film’s DVD release date, on November 5, 2024.

That said, this is all speculation. There is not yet an official Trap Max release date. If you want to watch the new M. Night Shyamalan movie right away, you can buy or rent the movie online. But watch out… this whole article could be a trap.
