True crime fans were just gifted a closer look at Ryan Murphy‘s highly anticipated Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, and the Menendez family’s unsettling dynamic.

In the official teaser trailer, which Netflix released on Tuesday, viewers meet the Menendez family — matriarch Kitty (Chloë Sevigny) and patriarch Jose (Javier Bardem) seated in front of sons Lyle (Nicholas Alexander Chavez) and Erik (Cooper Koch ) — as they pose for a family picture.

However, there’s more than what meets the eye, as Kitty can be heard overhead imploring her husband to tell her “what’s going on with [him] and the boys.”

Jose asks, “What do you mean?”

Kitty replies, “I don’t want there to be any more lies between us. I won’t tell anyone.”

Jose assures Kitty, “it’s over.”

“Stop,” he adds. “I’m going to fix this family.”

Jose’s words don’t seem to hold so much weight once the teaser transitions to Lyle and Erik embracing each other, as the ominous music is sharply cut by the sound of a gunshot and Lyle’s face is revealed to be splattered with blood.

“It’s just us now,” one brother can be heard saying, as the other chimes in, “We’re on our own.”

In 1996, Lyle and Erik were convicted of murdering their parents , and are both serving life sentences in prison without parole in California. As noted in the upcoming true crime installment’s first teaser, the two brothers murdered their parents on Aug. 20, 1989, per Deadline.
