Scandal star Kerry Washington returned to her character’s roots as a political secret weapon Thursday (Aug. 23) when she took the stage at the 2024 Democratic National Convention. And to make her special appearance all the more special, her on-screen love interest Tony Goldwyn, who starred as Republican President Fitzgerald Grant III in the Shonda Rhimes series, joined her on stage.
While welcoming the audience to the final night of the DNC, Washington asked someone to bring her phone to the stage as she urged the crowd, “Just like Michelle Obama told us, let’s do something. Let’s make a video… I wanna capture this historic moment and share it with the people we love.”
The crowd began to cheer as Goldwyn joined Washington on stage with her cell phone. “Oh hi!” Washington said.
They then led the crowd in a chant of Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign slogan: “When we fight, we win!”
The former co-stars shared a hilarious moment once they finished. As Washington took her place back at the podium to continue her impassioned speech in support of Harris, Goldwyn asked, “I don’t get to stay?”
“No, you gotta go,” she responded. “Tony Goldwyn, ladies and gentlemen!”
Washington later shared a selfie of herself and Goldwyn, writing, “Giving the people what they want….”
She starred in the Shondaland series as Olivia Pope, a “fixer’ or crisis management expert living in D.C. who begins having an affair with the U.S. President (Goldwyn). Their palpable chemistry both on and off the screen has inspired several rumors that the co-stars were secretly having an affair.
To some fans at home, this could be just what Harris needs to win the election.
Someone recently shared an electoral map on X that was completely blue, writing, “The electoral map after Kerry Washington and Tony Goldwyn do a tell-all about their relationship on the DNC stage.”
Washington reposted it on X and commented, “Anything for democracy I guess…”
Their touching appearance at the DNC may not have been the tell-all fans were looking for, but it’s something!
