CNN’s chief domestic correspondent Phil Mattingly was in the Bravo Clubhouse for Thursday night’s (Aug. 15) episode of Watch What Happens Live, where he suggested former Rep. George Santos join a Real Housewives cast.

Mattingly’s subtle dig at the controversial figure came when a virtual fan asked him to name the “dumbest politician” he had ever interacted with during his career.

“I’m gonna try to stay employed tonight,” Mattingly said.

However, host Andy Cohen wasn’t going to let him off the hook that easy. The Bravo icon then asked Mattingly if he had ever interviewed Santos, who was expelled from the House of Representatives in December 2023.

“[He] would’ve been a wonderful addition to a Housewife team — a Housewife cast,” Mattingly said, to which Cohen replied, “We wouldn’t want him.”

Mattingly went on to answer the question in a “politically correct way,” telling Cohen, “Congress is a wonderful place because it is representative of the entire country. And they have a lot of brilliant people. And there are others as well.”

Cohen quipped, “Marjorie Taylor Greene,” before moving on to the next question.

This isn’t the first time someone has pitched Santos to join Bravo. After the former politician was ousted from Congress and began facing federal charges related to alleged fraud and campaign finance violations, Last Week Tonight host John Oliver begged Cohen to cast Santos in one of the Real Housewives franchises.

However, Cohen had the same answer as he did on Watch What Happens Live.

“Let me be clear. We don’t want him,” Cohen said on his Sirius XM radio show Andy Cohen Live, per Deadline. “Anyone who has had those traits [of a criminal and a liar] are people that were cast and then it’s like, wait a minute, this guy … everything’s not what it seemed. Kind of like what happened with the people of New York State.”

Watch What Happens Live airs Sunday through Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on Bravo. New episodes are available to stream the next day on Peacock.
