It is always sad to see such an entertaining show end. Nevertheless, they all have to go eventually, and it is always best when they can end on their own terms. The popular horror comedy series What We Do in the Shadows will be having a sixth season coming out later this year, with that season being the show’s last. Recently, an official premiere date of this final season was announced, meaning fans will get to find out when they get to enjoy new episodes of the series for the final time. Here is everything you need to know about the upcoming sixth and final season of What We Do in the Shadows, including details on when that season will be released.

What is What We Do in the Shadows about?

Based on Taika Waititi’s film of the name, What We Do in the Shadows follows Nandor (Kayvan Novak), Laszlo Leslie “Laszlo” Cravensworth (Matt Berry), Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), and Colin (Mark Proksch), a group of vampires that live together in a Staten Island home. The vampires live with Guillermo (Harvey Guillén), Nandor’s familiar who maintains the home and hopes that he can one day be turned into a vampire. Considering many residents of the household have been alive for centuries, they often have conflicts with today’s world as they try to figure out modern technology and language. They also sometimes have conflicts with supernatural creatures. The series is a peak inside all of their lives, which are certainly far from normal, but also quite quirky and entertaining.

Even though the sixth season of What We Do in the Shadows will not be released for a while, there are already many plot details that have been revealed. Along with the date announcement, the series revealed the season’s focus is that “After a very brief stint as a full-blown vampire, Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) is re-evaluating his life. Who is he if not a familiar who will do anything to please his Master in hopes of one day being turned into a vampire? Meanwhile, the vampires are reevaluating, too. When their former roommate reappears after a 50-year nap, they realize how little they’ve done in half a century — not one goal accomplished, not one dream pursued, not one part of the New World conquered (except for their street and part of Ashley Street).” It sounds like there will be a lot of intrigue this season, as everyone starts to take a deep look at their own lives. What could that mean for their eventual fates?

What are the other revealed details about What We Do in the Shadows Season 6?

Along with the official description, there have also been some other exciting teases about what will happen from the cast and crew. Showrunner Paul Simms revealed a few details of the final season in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. He revealed that “We have two episodes that are homages to our favorite movies from the 1970s, and I won’t say what one of them is, but Nandor disappears and goes basically up a river and is causing trouble.” In addition, “Laszlo is returning to some research that he’d abandoned a long time ago,” Simms claimed, “He can use cadaver parts and electricity to create a new man, who will be their new familiar. Colin is helping him out, because he realized that the one thing he’s always missed is having an actual friend. So, he wants to make a new friend — literally.” When it came to the feeling of the final season, and the final episodes, Simms told Collider he promises that “…We made the whole season to sort of be like another season, where you don’t have to see any of the seasons before. For the superfans, there are things that are paid off, but other than that, it’s just a bunch of funny episodes and funny stuff happening, building to a very fun and funny conclusion.”

In terms of who will be in the cast, no big departures have been revealed. However, there should be some fun people joining the cast. An already announced addition is former Saturday Night Live cast member Mike O’Brien. O’Brien will be playing Jerry, a former roommate of the core group that has been in a deep slumber for 50 years. When he wakes up, it changes everyone’s dynamics. O’Brien’s role was revealed at Comic-Con, when he appeared in the screening of the upcoming season’s first episode. So far, he is the only future guest star revealed, but he will certainly not be the last one. Simms told Entertainment Weekly that “This season, our main goal was to use our favorite, funniest people that for five years we’ve wanted to use.” In addition, he mentioned that an especially exciting guest star will play Laszlo’s father. This tease is indicating that there is a lot for fans to look forward to.
