Guts and gore are where it’s at in this week’s new movies on VOD. For those of you looking for that unholy union of body horror, random impalements, and Catholic conspiracies, The First Omen has arrived on VOD (and on Hulu), but if straight up revenge by way of choreographed fight scenes is more your thing, Boy Kills World is also out now.
For something less serious, you can check out Chris Pine’s directorial debut Poolman, a star-studded affair in which Pine plays a pool boy-detective named Darren Barrenman who uses his investigative skills to solve a Chinatown-esque mystery as he investigates the shady dealings of a businessman played by Stephen Tobolowsky. The reviews for the film haven’t been kind, but the cast is stellar: the ensemble features Danny DeVito, Annette Bening, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and De Wanda Wise, among may other talents
These are just a few of the films that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Check out what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now.
The First Omen
The First Omen serves as a prequel to the original 1976 film The Omen, and stars Nell Tiger Free as Margaret, and American woman sent to Rome in hopes of becoming a nun. While she’s there, she begins experiencing demonic possession and uncovers a conspiracy within the church to bring the Antichrist to life. The film premiered on VOD on Tuesday and also arrived on Hulu on May 30.
Boy Kills World
Boy Kills World is a stylized revenge fantasy starring Bill Skarsgard as a character named Boy living in a dystopian society, whose mother and sister are killed in a Hunger Games-style murder on live television. Boy spends years training with a martial arts expert to exact his revenge on the city’s leaders who orchestrated the killings, and now, as an adult, he makes his play. In the film, Boy is deaf and mute, and his inner monologue is voiced by H. Jon Benjamin who narrates Boy’s story as if he’s in a video game.
