Sundance 2024 Movies: 9 Big Films You Can Watch Online, From ‘A Real Pain’ to ‘Rob Peace’

Sundance Film Festival is back! The famed festival will be in person in Park City, Utah, from January 18–28. But just because you can stand in line in the snow outside Eccles Theater doesn’t mean you have to. The 2024 Sundance Film Festival will also be online this year, and while not every film will be available to watch virtually, quite a few of them will be. And as of last Thursday, anyone can buy individual tickets to the online screenings at Sundance 2024.

Purchasing tickets online is easy: Just make a free account over at festival.sundance.org, browse the Sundance 2024 program, and add films that you find interesting to your “favorites” list. You can then buy tickets to your favorite films under “My Schedule.” Single tickets cost $25. (Or, if you have a pass, you can then “reserve” a seat at a film premiere on your schedule if there are still seats available.) Online tickets are limited, and are sold on a first-come, first-served basis, so don’t delay!

After you purchase, your ticket will be valid from January 25 through 28. During this period, you can stream the movie via Sundance’s online portal. That means you won’t get to see the film at the same time it’s premiering in person. But a few days isn’t so long to wait, right?

Be sure to check each movie’s description to see if it is listed as “Available online.” Not every Sundance 2023 film will be available online. Some of the biggest films, like Kristen Stewart’s Love Lies Bleeding, will not be online .But other highly anticipated films, including the new Jesse Eisenberg movie, A Real Pain, will be available online. Decider is all about helping you stream movies at home, so for your convenience, we’ve put together a list of some of the biggest Sundance 2024 movies that are available online. Here are the Sundance 2024 online highlights that you don’t want to miss.

  1. A Real Pain

Kieran Culkin and Jesse Eisenberg appear in A Real Pain by Jesse Eisenberg,

    Director: Jesse Eisenberg
    Cast: Jesse Eisenberg, Kieran Culkin
Available online: Thursday, January 25, 10 am ET – Monday, January 29, 1:55 a.m. ET
Why we’re hyped: Jesse Eisenberg proved he was a skilled filmmaker with When You Finish Saving the World, which premiered at Sundance in 2022. Now Eisenberg has returned to his favorite film festival with a light drama about two very different cousins (played by Eisenberg and Culkin) who take a tour of Poland in honor of their late grandmother, a World War II survivor. It sounds like a poignant and touching examination of intergenerational trauma and complicated family history, and we can’t wait to watch.

  2. Love Me

Kristen Stewart and Steven Yeun appear in Love Me

    Director: Sam and Andy Zuchero
    Cast: Kristen Stewart, Steven Yeun
Available online: Thursday, January 25, 10 am ET – Monday, January 29, 1:55 a.m. ET
Why we’re hyped: Although you won’t be able to watch Kristen Stewart in Love Lies Bleeding via Sundance’s online portal, you can watch another one of her Sundance films—this odd little romance with Oscar-nominee Steven Yeun, which may or may not be about inanimate objects. The film’s cryptic logline reads only: “Long after humanity’s extinction, a buoy and a satellite meet online and fall in love.” The official Sundance description promises that Stewart and Yeun inhabit “star-crossed, web-paired metallic protagonists” in “different forms.” Color us intrigued! We have faith that these two great actors will make this bizarre premise work.

  3. Rob Peace

A still from Rob Peace by Chiwetel Ejiofor,

    Director: Chiwetel Ejiofor
Cast: Jay Will, Mary J. Blige, Chiwetel Ejiofor
Available online: Thursday, January 25, 10 am ET – Monday, January 29, 1:55 a.m. ET
Why we’re hyped: Oscar-nominated actor Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) has already proved he can direct with The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, and now Ejiofor has turned his attention to the true story of celebrated academic and drug dealer Robert Peace. Based on Jeff Hobbs’ bestselling biography about the Yale graduate who studied molecular biophysics and biochemistry while also earning six figures selling weed, this one sounds fascinating—and we’re happy to see Ejiofor will also be on screen, playing Peace’s father.

  4. Stress Positions

John Early appears in Stress Positions by Theda Hammel,
    Photo: NEON

    Director: Theda Hammel
Cast: John Early, Qaher Harhash Theda Hammel
Available online: Thursday, January 25, 10 am ET – Monday, January 29, 1:55 a.m. ET
Why we’re hyped: If you’re a fan of I Think You Should Leave with Tom Robinson, you’ll want to make sure you grab tickets to this Sundance comedy. John Early, a frequent Robinson collaborator, stars as a man quarantining in the home of his ex-husband’s home, while caring for his nephew, a 19-year-old model from Morocco named Bahlul. Don’t worry, it’s not COVID—Early’s character is bedridden in a full leg cast after an electric scooter accident. But we’re sure there will be plenty of COVID parallels in what promises to a be sharp script from returning Sundance filmmaker Theda Hammel (My Trip to Spain).

  5. Ponyboi

    Director: Esteban Arango
Cast: River Gallo, Dylan O’Brien, Indya Moore
Available online: Thursday, January 25, 10 am ET – Monday, January 29, 1:55 a.m. ET
Why we’re hyped: After writing and directing the 2019 short of the same name, intersex actor and filmmaker River Gallo has turned their story of an intersex sex worker on the run from the mob. Not only will this be a landmark feature for intersex representation in cinema, but it also has a treat for Teen Wolf fans: Fan-favorite Dylan O’Brien in a supporting role. This is not a drill!

  6. Thelma

June Squibb and Fred Hechinger appear in Thelma by Josh Margolin
Photo: Courtesy of Sundance Institute / David Bolen

    Director: Josh Margolin
Cast: June Squibb, Parker Posey, Clark Gregg, Fred Hechinger
Available online: Thursday, January 25, 10 am ET – Monday, January 29, 1:55 a.m. ET
Why we’re hyped: It’s been over a decade since 94-year-old June Squib earned herself an Oscar nomination in 2013’s Nebraska, so we’re thrilled to see take front in center as the lead in this quirky comedy about an elderly woman seeking revenge on a phone scammer. Plus, with Parker Posey and Clark Gregg rounding out the supporting cast, this one is an almost guaranteed fun watch.

  7. Little Death

David Schwimmer appears in Little Death
    Photo: Courtesy of Sundance Institute

    Director: Jack Begert
Cast: David Schwimmer, Talia Ryder, Dominic Fike
Available online: Thursday, January 25, 10 am ET – Monday, January 29, 1:55 a.m. ET
Why we’re hyped: It’s been a minute since we’ve seen Friends star David Schwimmer on screen in a leading role. (The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story was eight years ago!) This new dark comedy from music video director Jack Berger finds Schwimmer as a middle-age screenwriter on the verge of a breakthrough. While we grow weary of movies about making movies, this one sounds just bizarre and surreal enough to peak our interest.

  8. Sue Bird: In The Clutch

Sue Bird appears in Sue Bird: In The Clutch by Sarah Dowlan
    Photo: Courtesy of Sundance Institute

    Director: Sarah Dowland
    Cast: Sue Bird, Megan Rapinoe
Available online: Thursday, January 25, 10 am ET – Monday, January 29, 1:55 a.m. ET
Why we’re hyped: This one’s for the women-loving-women: A documentary WNBA basketball legend and five-time Olympic gold winner, Sue Bird, who will face her next big challenge of retiring. Also featuring Bird’s famous fiancée, U.S. soccer star Megan Rapinoe, this is an archive of queer history in real time.

  9. Suncoast

A still from Suncoast by Laura Chinn,

    Director: Laura Chinn
Cast: Nico Parker, Laura Linney, Woody Harrelson
Available online: Thursday, January 25, 10 am ET – Monday, January 29, 1:55 a.m. ET
Why we’re hyped: Move aside, ’80s nostalgia—it’s finally the time for early aughts coming-of-age stories to shine. This story about a teen girl who befriends an “eccentric activist who is protesting one of the most landmark medical cases of all time” in 2005 looks adorable, quirky and sweet. Sundance has a knack for highlighting quality teen stories, like the Best Picture winner CODA, and we’re excited for Laura Chinn’s directorial debut. That said, no sweat if you miss this one—it’s coming to Hulu on February 9!
