Those who tuned into Sunday night’s (Jan. 7) Golden Globes are well aware that Alan Ruck was using a cane on the red carpet, merely months after being involved in a four-way crash in Los Angeles. However, it appears there’s more to the story.

Sources close to the Succession star informed TMZ that the cane was neither a result of the car accident, nor an accessory. Instead, it was related to Ruck’s full knee replacement, which he underwent three and a half weeks prior to the Sunday ceremony.

Ruck addressed the Oct. 31 crash in early November, clarifying that he was “fine” after the incident.

“Thank God nobody was killed,” he told TMZ.

He also claimed that a limp he suffered from “wasn’t because of the accident,” but attributed his altered gait to “getting old.”

According to USA Today, Ruck was sued last month by Horacio Vela, whose car was hit by Ruck’s while he was at a red light during the October accident. Neama Rahmani, Vela’s attorney, claimed in a statement that State Farm, Ruck’s insurance company, “has refused to accept responsibility for the crash.”

The driver alleged that the actor “abruptly and forcefully accelerated his vehicle, colliding with the right rear bumper”of his car after Ruck was stopped behind him at the light.

Rahmani added, “We believe Ruck is responsible for the damages, but because Ruck chose to get insurance through State Farm and State Farm isn’t taking care of their insured, we had to file a lawsuit to subpoena evidence and witnesses to prove our case. If State Farm finally accepts fault, we are happy to negotiate a settlement with them.”

Ruck was nominated at the 2024 Golden Globes in the Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role on Television category for his work as Succession‘s Conor Roy. However, the Golden Globe ultimately went to his Succession co-star, Matthew Macfayden, for his role of Tom Wambsgans.
