Less than a week after the movie adaptation was released on Netflix, Rumaan Alam’s novel Leave the World Behind is popping up on bestseller lists again.
The film stars Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke as Amanda and Clay, a married couple on a weekend trip to Long Island with their kids, as widely used technology like phones, computers, and more begin to gradually break down. G.H. (Mahershala Ali) and his daughter Ruth (Myha’la) appear at the vacation house to seek refuge and ride out the collapse of society.
Leave the World Behind was directed by Sam Esmail (Mr. Robot) and produced by Higher Ground, the production company founded by Barack and Michelle Obama. While the Obamas weren’t directly involved in the scripting or filming of the movie, Sam Esmail said that they helped get the movie made, in part because Barack was a big fan of the novel.
Alam’s novel first hit shelves in October 2020, and in addition to becoming a New York Times bestseller, it was also a finalist for the 2020 National Book Award in Fiction, named to multiple best-of-the-year lists, and selected by Jenna Bush Hager to be a Read With Jenna book club pick.
Right now, the bestseller is discounted in three different formats on Amazon.
