A new report from Ampere Analysis reveals Disney+ and Hulu‘s forthcoming merger will likely best Netflix in terms of popularity and amount of titles available on the platform, per Deadline.

According to said report, Disney+ was home to 17 of the 100 most popular domestic titles in Q3 while Hulu offered 16 of them, meaning that together, they hold one third of the list. Netflix offered 29, while Max held 18, Paramount+ Premium had 17, Peacock streamed 16, and Prime Video was home to 11, per The Hollywood Reporter.

According to THR, some of Hulu’s top titles included Only Murders in the Building and American Horror Story, while Disney+’s included Star Wars: Ahsoka and Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3. All previous seasons of Grey’s Anatomy will also make its way to Hulu next spring while also streaming on Netflix, per Variety.

With respect to total amount of titles, the combined app would grant its subscribers to 9,578 pieces of content, which according to the data and analytics firm, “would position Disney+ and Hulu’s total content offering behind only Amazon Prime Video’s 10,892 titles and ahead of Netflix’s 8,391 as of the third quarter 2023,” per THR.

According to Ampere analyst Joshua Rustage via Deadline, “The combined Disney+ and Hulu catalogue will provide one of the most well-rounded and popular offerings in a single platform, upping the content stakes at a time when many are pulling back on content investment.”

He continued, “Rivals will have to ensure their offerings remain competitive as the battle for viewing time intensifies, especially as the need to pull in advertising dollars is now also central to the streaming mix.”

The outlet also reported that the beta launch of the Disney+ and Hulu “one-app experience” was launched last Wednesday (Dec. 6), with a new Hulu icon being added onto the home screen of Disney+. The complete combined app is slated for a March launch. Disney CEO Bob Iger noted on a Nov. 8 quarterly earnings call that this beta launch was enacted so that they “can prepare parents, largely, to basically implement parental controls.”

“Because you’ll be able to access Hulu programming on the same app,” he continued. “We found that where we bundle, we lower churn.”
