Hoda Kotb And Jenna Bush Hager Cried On ‘Today’ After Watching Clip Of Tyler Perry’s New Documentary ‘Maxine’s Baby’: “So Beautiful And Moving”

Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager had to break out the tissues out on Today after sharing the incredible trailer for Tyler Perry‘s upcoming documentary, Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story.

“I know another celebrity who’s sharing his story and we adore him. I cannot wait for this documentary,” Kotb told Bush Hager, who appeared to wholeheartedly agree.

Kotb explained that Perry had a “very difficult” upbringing on his way to becoming “one of the most successful filmmakers of a generation.”

The trailer shared a glimpse of Perry’s past and present, with loved ones recounting how his strained relationship with his father and his difficult childhood influenced the iconic movies he later became known for creating.

The Today co-hosts were visibly moved as they reached for the tissues once the trailer ended. “Woah,” Bush Hager said. “That is incredible.”

“Is it in the theaters, where is it?” Kotb asked her stage crew, to which Bush Hager added, “We’re going!”

Maxine’s Baby will actually be streaming on Amazon’s Prime Video starting Nov. 17, but that didn’t sway Bush Hager. “Okay fine, we’re going to our couch!” she exclaimed.

Kotb agreed that the premiere will be a can’t-miss event, calling it “appointment TV viewing.”

“I know bits of his story which are so beautiful and moving, what he went through,” Kotb said.

Bush Hager was similarly moved. “Yes, and to come out on the other side soft, and loving, and giving,” she said. “Ugh, we need more Tyler Perrys in this world!”

Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story, directed by Gelila Bekele and Armani Ortiz, will be one of the first times the filmmaker has opened up about his family and personal life. According to the synopsis from Prime Video, Maxine’s Baby will recount Perry’s “harrowing-but-faithful road to the top of an industry that didn’t always include him.”

The emotional trailer gave an intimate look at his contrasting relationships with his parents. The trailer begins with him remembering his relationship with his father, saying, “I just could not understand how this man could look at me and hate me with such passion.”

But it ends on a touching moment he shared with his mother, Willie Maxine Perry, who passed away in 2009.

“Tyler, I just want to tell you how blessed I am to have a son like you,” the documentary shows her saying.

Today with Jenna and Hoda airs on weekdays at 10/9c on NBC.
