Lollapalooza

Powered by Reelgood

Lollapalooza, the venerable music festival founded as a touring extravaganza by Perry Farrell of Jane’s Addiction in an ancient time known as the early 1990s, has now existed as a destination event for nearly two decades. Taking over Chicago’s Grant Park each August, and sandwiched between the majestic Loop skyline and the glittering lakefront, the 2023 edition of Lolla will feature hundreds of acts over four days and span across numerous stages. Just imagine. Armies of teenagers clad in basketball jerseys and pit crew-style jumpsuits, descending en masse on the very streets where NASCAR held its first Chicago street race less than a month ago. And they’re all looking for the bathroom.

Now imagine not having to deal with any of that bullshit. Thanks to Hulu, it’s easy to stay comfy in your chill zone and stream sets straight from the fest. Just as live and just as loud, but without having to fight your way to something called Dessert Island. Hulu will stream sets live across all four days of Lollapalooza, with its coverage presented across two channels and broken into Daytime, Golden Hour, and Late Night blocks. So who you got? Read on for a few of our hand-picked Lolla faves.

  1. Billie Eilish

    Thursday, Aug 3, 9:45pm EST

Why be only one of the zillions of people who streamed Billie Eilish’s hushed Barbie ballad “What Was I Made For” when you could be somebody who streams an entire live set from the award-winning singer-songwriter? On her recently completed world tour in support of Happier Than Ever, Eilish brought out strobe lights, big hits (“NDA,” “Lost Cause,” “Bad Guy”), her brother and regular collaborator Finneas, and a balance of quieter moments to connect with the crowds, and this Lolla set is sure to approach that level of grandeur as Eilish plays against the backdrop of Chicago’s downtown museum campus.

  2. Back to Back: Portugal. the Man, Lainey Wilson

    Thursday Aug 3, 7:45pm, 8:45pm EST

Do you still “Feel It Still”? Portland-based Portugal. The Man wrote one of the most enduring earworms of last decade with their Grammy-winning 2017 single, and just put out their ninth record, Chris Black Changed My Life, this past June. And PTM’s burbling, upbeat rock-pop sound should bookend nicely with the bracing country of singer-songwriter and Yellowstone co-star Lainey Wilson, whose 2022 album Bell Bottom Country fuses ‘70s rock and an outlaw spirit with balladry, proving there’s more than one way to stomp a boot.

  3. Tomorrow X Together

    Saturday, Aug 5, 9:30pm EST

From Big Hit Music, who brought you the worldwide K-pop phenomenon BTS, comes the winsome pop sound of Seoul-based five-some Tomorrow X Together. This headlining set follows TXT’s 2022 Lolla debut, which made Soobin, Taehyun, Beomgyu, Yeonjun, HueningKai the first Korean act to ever take the stage at the fest; The Name Changer: Temptation EP, which appeared earlier this year, was followed by the smash single “Do It Like That,” an effortlessly slick slice of futuristic disco that features support from The Jonas Brothers.

  4. Odesza

    Saturday, Aug 5, 9:45 EST

If you caught the latest season of How To With John Wilson on Max and thought, “Damn, I wish I was riding on a party bus to a concert by Odesza,” Hulu has your back with this live stream. And because you’ll be at home, you won’t even have to search for a public restroom. Flaws in Our Design, the duo’s latest release, sort of sounds like Tame Impala if that band was taken over by Spotify’s “Sounds of Summer” algorithm – together with stuff like “Sun Models,” Odesza’s 2014 single with Madelyn Grant, this Lolla set should reach out and touch the night sky above the city.

  5. Dehd

    Sunday, Aug 6, 3:30pm EST

Chicago indie rockers Dehd are usually most at home bashing out their delightfully trashy, super-hooky anthems in rock clubs with low ceilings and even lower lighting. But transpose all of that onto an outdoor stage in the blazing sun, and the effect will undoubtedly be replicated for a summer music festival. Besides, Blue Skies (Fat Possum), the fourth studio album from Emily Kempf, Jason Balla, and Eric McGrady, already sounded like a record to crush cans of el cheapo domestic beer to. The genius of catching Dehd’s set on a live stream is that you can do that while serenading your neighbors with all of the shouted choruses.

  6. Rina Sawayama

    Sunday, Aug 6, 7:45 EST

Fresh off her starring role in John Wick 4 as Shimazu Akira, the concierge of the Osaka Continental who survived the hotel’s destruction to avenge her father Koji’s death, Rina Sawayama hits the northern main stage of Lollapalooza positioned between two other seriously cool people, Lil Yachty and Lana Del Rey. With an impatient sound that tramples across multiple genres including screamy metal, tittering R&B, and electronic pop (she collaborated with Charli XCX for 2022’s “Beg for You”), this set feels like a little bit of a wild card, but in an extremely fun way. When it comes to festival grooves, Rina Sawayama has served. She will be of service.
