Emmys Will Be Postponed Until 2024 in the Wake of SAG-AFTRA and WGA Strikes: Report

The 75th Primetime Emmys are officially on hold — and vendors have been notified, according to Variety. Amid the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the outlet revealed that the original Sept. 18 airdate has been pushed back, marking the first time the ceremony has been delayed since the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The news doesn’t quite come as a surprise in light of Hollywood’s shutdown — but it is the first time it’s officially been confirmed. While a new date for the award show hasn’t been decided yet, Variety previously reported that The Academy is pushing for a November 2023 date, while Fox is aiming for January 2024.

According to Deadline, an official date is expected to be announced in August — although, sources told the outlet that the Emmys will, in fact, be held in January.

“Like the rest of the industry, we hope there will be an equitable and timely resolution for all parties in the current guild negotiations,” the TV Academy said in a statement, per Variety. “We continue to monitor the situation closely with our partners at Fox and will advise if and when there is an update available.”

This year’s nominations — which saw recognition for hit shows like Succession, Ted Lasso and Daisy Jones & the Six — were announced on July 12. Two days later, the SAG-AFTRA strike commenced after negotiations with major studios failed. Both SAG-AFTRA and WGA — which has been on strike since early May — are fighting for residuals from streaming companies as well as clear terms on how the industry plans to use artificial intelligence, among other things.

Under the unions’ guidelines, actors and writers are not allowed to work or promote any of their projects, which has resulted in the shutdown of numerous productions.

Ahead of the SAG-AFTRA strike, Fran Drescher, the union’s president, slammed “disgusting” studio execs for their treatment of actors amid the turmoil.

“You cannot keep being dwindled and marginalized and disrespected and dishonored. The entire business model has been changed by streaming, digital, AI,” she added. “If we don’t stand tall right now, we are all going to be in trouble. We are all going to be in jeopardy of being replaced by machines and big business who cares more about Wall Street than you and your family.”
