The Primetime Emmy Award nominations have arrived, but they’re being revealed during a particularly precarious moment in Hollywood.
The upcoming Emmy Awards allow for television programs that aired between June 1, 2022 and May 31, 2023 to be recognized, which means a number of recent favorites such as I’m A Virgo may not be in contention. But the first half of 2023 delivered an exceptional slate of television across genres, from The White Lotus to Abbott Elementary, and Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which have all been named shoe-ins for Emmy nods this year.
But, considering that the writers strike is still in full swing almost two months in, and SAG-AFTRA is dealing with their own unsuccessful contract negotiations, celebrating the fruits of their labor feels bittersweet.
One of the most contentious categories this year will surely be the Outstanding Drama Series. 2023 alone has seen The Last of Us and Succession. Though Last of Us was surely one of the year’s biggest releases, 2023 marks the final year Succession will be considered for a Primetime Emmy since the series ended this May. That may help set them up for success — besides the fact that the series already ended on a strong note.
The Primetime Emmy Award nominations are being announced July 12 by Emmy-nominated actress Yvette Nicole Brown and Television Academy chair Frank Scherma. You can tune into the 2023 Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony when it airs Sept. 18.
For now, here’s a full list of 2023 nominees, updated as they come in:
