If Greta Gerwig hasn’t received enough buzz from the upcoming Barbie movie hitting theaters on July 28, then this news will surely score her some — or at least some free Turkish delight!

Gerwig has set a deal with Netflix to direct a film adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia novels. The literary series consists of seven books, which were all originally published between 1950 and 1956. According to The New Yorker, Gerwig’s deal involves her directing two films for the streaming provider.

This is not the first time that the mystical world of talking animals only accessed through a wardrobe has been adapted for the big screen. Disney produced the two stories of Lewis’ series: the 2005 The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion. the Witch, and the Wardrobe and the 2008 The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. Fox then produced The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader in 2010, per The Hollywood Reporter.

According to IndieWire, Netflix securing the rights to all seven books of Lewis’ series is the first time a single company has conquered this feat.

Netflix’s recent endeavors have included a lot of book-to-movie adaptations. The streaming provider’s acquisition of the Roald Dahl Story Company in 2021 gave way for the musical version of Dahl’s beloved Matilda at the end of 2022 and Wes Anderson‘s 37-minute-long adaptation of Dahl’s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, which has yet to be released.

As for Gerwig, her direction of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women proved that she can take on an iconic literary story, as it earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.

If this read made you nostalgic, all three of the previous Narnia film adaptations are available for streaming on Disney+.
